A ticket to “Springsteen on Broadway” at the St. James Theatre will set you back $75 to $850.

But if you were cruising any of the ticket resale websites Wednesday afternoon, that price went as high as nearly $9,000.

The tickets weren’t even available yet on SeatGeek, the official ticket website for the event.

One of the resale hubs, Vivid Seats, lists Saturday night orchestra seats for $8,642. How did it have such a specific listing a day before the sale starts?

The answer is that it didn’t. The tickets didn’t exist, and the listing wasn’t valid.

The website, which claims it has a “100% worry-free guarantee,” says it is “not the ticket seller” but “a resale marketplace.” Prices, it says, are set by third-party sellers.

But Michael O’Neil, who works in community engagement for Vivid Seats, tells NJ Advance Media the “Springsteen on Broadway” tickets were just a “test.”

“That shouldn’t be up,” he said when asked about the tickets.

By then, the listings had been scrubbed from the website, along with similar listings on sites like ticketsonsale.com, which priced the Broadway tickets at more than $1,000 each.

“Sometimes we do a practice,” O’Neil said. “It was a test that we do before big shows.”

He said a web manager confirmed that the tickets and prices amounted to a dummy listing, not the real deal.

Springsteen is returning to Broadway on June 26 after his show closed in 2018 following a run of 236 performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

The Boss, who announced the show’s big comeback Monday, was feted with a special Tony Award for the autobiographical “Springsteen on Broadway.” The production also became a Netflix film and an album.

The second run of the show is scheduled to continue this summer through Sept. 4, ahead of the return of many other Broadway productions, including those that were shut down in March 2020.

As for the official “Springsteen on Broadway” sale, the one that tops out at $850 per ticket, that starts at noon ET Thursday, June 10 on SeatGeek. Unlike previous sales, there is no access code (there will be a digital queue).

There’s a two-ticket limit per person, and audience members must provide proof that they are fully vaccinated at the door (the show must be at least 14 days after their second/final vaccine), along with a government-issued ID (or school ID if they are under 18). Children under 16 have to be accompanied by a vaccinated adult and provide a record of a negative antigen COVID-19 test taken six hours before showtime or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the show.

Ticketholders must also complete a health survey 24 hours before the performance. Entry times will be assigned and staggered as part of COVID-19 safety protocols.
