Dr. Laurie Stuart Magee Flanders

Dr. Laurie Stuart Magee Flanders, 75, passed away Saturday, October 20 at her residence in Excelsior, MN. She had been ill for some time, suffering from Parkinson's disease and heart failure. A service is scheduled for 2 pm Friday, November 2, in the Memorial Chapel at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Laurie is survived by her husband, Dr. George W. Flanders; sons Christopher (Caryn) Rich, Woodland MN, and Robert Rich, Chaska MN; step son Marc (Colleen) Flanders, Shorewood MN; and step daughters Gigi (Byron) Rodgers, Carrollton, KY, and Tina (Robert) Nieto, Southport, FL.; and by her sister Bonnie Magee (John) Simenson, Victoria, MN.

An educator her entire adult life, Laurie's work was focused on the needs of students enrolled in special education. She received her training at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, graduating in 1972. In 1994 she earned the Master of Education degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership was awarded in 1998, also at UNLV.

In her early career, Laurie taught children with communication disorders in the Minnetonka, MN School District. In 1991, she and her husband moved to Henderson, NV. Her service there was divided between the Clark County and Nye County school districts, specializing in the needs of children diagnosed with autism.

While continuing to teach, Laurie authored "Principals Guide for Schools with Autistic Students", and participated in the writing and publishing of "Nevada School Law - Cases, Materials, and Nevada Constitution."

Laurie graduated from Duluth East High School in 1961. Her parents were Belmont Burdette Magee and Jean Muriel Johnson Magee. Her siblings in addition to Bonnie Simenson included the late Jean Muriel Magee (AI) Merry of Duluth and the late Belmont Burdette (aka Sam) Magee.
