Dave Roberts doesn’t expect Trevor Bauer to return to Dodgers this week
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday he doesn’t expect pitcher Trevor Bauer to return to the team at the end of the week when his seven-day paid administrative leave ends.
“I don’t see it happening,” Roberts said before the Dodgers opened a four-game series against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.
Major League Baseball placed Bauer on leave Friday after a woman accused him of sexual assault and obtained a temporary restraining order against him Tuesday.

MIAMI — Julio Urías dropped his left arm down, almost to a sidearm delivery, to fire a perfectly placed 95-mph strike to Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 6-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon.
His momentum pushed him to his left, toward the Dodgers’ dugout, and he didn’t stop. He swaggered off the mound at LoanDepot Park. His 101st and last pitch may have been his best one, and Chisholm could only watch.
The sinker completed a three-pitch strikeout — his ninth punch-out of the day. It marked the first time Urías, protected from injury by the Dodgers in recent years, topped 100 pitches in his major league career. It was exactly what the Dodgers, down to three healthy and available starting pitchers, needed to avoid a four-game sweep and rest an exhausted relief corps.
Dodgers relievers logged 35 innings over the previous week. Before the game, left-hander Darien Núñez became the seventh reliever added to the bullpen in seven days. The four-day All-Star break starting Monday will help buy the Dodgers time to reset and exhaust other options. As will performances like the one Urías delivered Thursday.
The only damage the Marlins (38-48) inflicted on the left-hander was Chisholm’s leadoff home run in the first inning. Urías gave up five hits and walked two as his innings count for the season reached 106 1/3, more than 20 innings beyond his previous career high.
He’ll have at least seven days of rest before his next start after becoming the first pitcher to reach 11 wins in the majors.
“I feel strong,” Urías said in Spanish. “I feel healthy.”

Clayton Kershaw expected to undergo an MRI exam Friday
MIAMI – Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Clayton Kershaw will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam when the team returns to Los Angeles. He said the MRI will probably take place Friday.
Kershaw was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left forearm inflammation. After the game, however, Roberts said Kershaw felt “something in his elbow” when he played catch earlier this week.
“Not a whole lot,” Roberts said when asked for his level of concern. “I think it’s just more of to skip a start, to leverage the break. I’m not too concerned about it.”
Kershaw, 33, logged four innings in his last start Saturday against the Washington Nationals. The outing was interrupted by a 1 hour, 44 minute rain delay. He has a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts this season. This is the first time Kershaw has gone on the injured list with an elbow or forearm injury.
Kershaw was scheduled to start Friday. The Dodgers will now have David Price lined up to log up to three innings as part of a bullpen game – the Dodgers’ third in six days.
Price has been a reliever this season, but it’s seemingly inevitable that the Dodgers will move him to the rotation with two holes to fill after Kershaw’s injury and Trevor Bauer’s time on paid administrative leave. Bauer is expected to have his seven-day leave extended another seven days Friday.
Roberts said “probably not” when asked if the club could afford to keep Price in the bullpen.

Hi, and welcome to another edition of Dodgers Dugout. My name is Houston Mitchell and just think: The Dodgers went 5-15 at one point this season, which makes their 53-31 all the more remarkable.
Here we are, three games past the exact midpoint of the season. What better time to look at how the players are doing?
For pitchers, we will look at their slash numbers (batting average/on-base %/slugging %) and their OPS+ (an OPS+ of 110 means they are 10% better than a league average hitter, 100 is league average, 90 is 10% below average, etc.).
For starting pitchers we will look at their ERA and ERA+ (just like OPS+, only using ERA).
For relievers, we will looking at their inherited runners who scored percentage (IRS%), compared to the league average (35%). The IRS% shows how effective a relief pitcher is when coming in with runners on base. Come in with two out and the bases loaded and give up a triple, then get out of the inning, your ERA is 0.00, but you didn’t really do your job. Your IRS% though would be 100%, really bad.

Kenley Jansen isn’t pleased he did not make the NL All-Star team
MIAMI _ Kenley Jansen was sure he would be named to the National League All-Star team. He studied the landscape. The Dodgers’ closer determined his numbers and impact on one of the best teams in the majors were too impressive to be overlooked.
But Major League Baseball’s All-Star rosters announcement Sunday didn’t include Jansen. All he could do was laugh.
“Laughing in disappointment,” Jansen said Monday at Marlins Park, lathered in sweat following a pregame workout. “It’s like an insult, kind of. I guess I gotta put up a zero ERA and have zero blown saves, probably, for me to get recognized.”
Jansen has neither of those, but the three-time All-Star isn’t far off. The 33-year-old right-hander began Tuesday with 21 saves in 23 chances and a 1.30 earned-run average across 34-2/3 innings. He hasn’t surrendered a run in 13 appearances since May 28. He’s reverted to his pre-2018 dominance, a throwback to when he was considered the best reliever in the major leagues.

Lawyers describe Trevor Bauer’s legal risk if he testifies at July 23 hearing
Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer could subject himself to significant legal liability by testifying at a hearing to consider whether a restraining order against him should remain in force, according to Los Angeles-area family law attorneys.
When a woman accusing Bauer of choking her unconscious and injuring her during sexual encounters obtained a temporary restraining order last week, his representatives said they planned “to refute and defend him against the allegations at this hearing.”
The hearing is scheduled for July 23.

The Dodgers have removed a Trevor Bauer bobblehead night from their promotional schedule this season.
Bauer is under investigation by Pasadena police after a woman accused him of choking her to the point of losing consciousness during two sexual encounters and injuring her during the second. Bauer, through his representatives, has said the encounters were “wholly consensual.”

The seemingly obvious answer is having David Price convert from reliever to the rotation, but the Dodgers have been avoided that option. The next-best choice is Josiah Gray, the organization’s top pitching prospect. Gray threw two perfect innings Sunday for Oklahoma City after missing two months with a shoulder impingement. It was just his second outing of 2021.
Jake Reed to start bullpen game Wednesday against Marlins
MIAMI — A night after making his major league debut, right-hander Jake Reed will make his first major league start in the Dodgers’ bullpen game against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Reed, 28, gave up a run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in the Dodgers’ 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Marlins on Tuesday. He was called up before the game after making nine appearances for triple-A Oklahoma City. He began the season with the Angels’ triple-A affiliate.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Reed will face up to five batters. The Dodgers are going with a bullpen game for the second time in four games as they navigate the schedule without Trevor Bauer.

MIAMI — The Dodgers gave Tony Gonsolin the ball with one assignment: to pitch as deep into Tuesday’s game as possible. The Dodgers, down to four starters with Trevor Bauer on leave, were bracing for a bullpen game Wednesday. They needed innings from Gonsolin.
The right-hander gave them a season-high 5 1/3 against the Miami Marlins and didn’t surrender a run, but the Dodgers were forced to used six relievers anyway because their offense went silent. In the end, two mishaps cost the Dodgers in a 2-1, 10-inning loss at LoanDepot Park.
Blake Treinen was one out away from extending the game to the 11th inning when he threw a wild pitch that ricocheted away from catcher Will Smith.
The Marlins’ Starling Marte, who started the inning at second base, sprinted to third after a delay, prompting Smith to make a throw that short-hopped Justin Turner. Shortstop Gavin Lux retrieved the ball down the line, but his throw was high and too late as Marte walked the game off on the error.

Dodgers place Victor González on IL, recall Garrett Cleavinger
MIAMI — The Dodgers placed left-hander Victor González on the 10-day injured list with left plantar fasciitis before Tuesday’s game against the Marlins.
Left-hander Garrett Cleavinger was recalled to take González’s spot on the roster. Cleavinger had been optioned to triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday when the Dodgers activated Scott Alexander.
González burst onto the scene last season and got crucial outs during their run to the championship. This year, he has been one of manager Dave Roberts’ most reliable relievers and leads the Dodgers in pitching appearances. But the Mexico native has stumbled lately.
Just one of González’s last 10 appearances has been clean and that one lasted one-third of an inning. On Tuesday, he surrendered the go-ahead solo home run to Jorge Alfaro in the eighth inning of the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss to the Marlins.
Roberts said he expects González’s stint on the injured list will be short. He’ll be out after the All-Star break, giving him a chance not only to heal but to rest his left arm for the second half of the season.

Dodgers sign Neftalí Feliz to minor league deal
MIAMI — The Dodgers signed veteran reliever Neftalí Feliz to a minor league contract Tuesday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Feliz, 33, was the 2010 American League Rookie of the Year and an elite reliever with the Texas Rangers for parts of three seasons before injuries derailed his career in 2012.
He appeared in two games for the Philadelphia Phillies last month. He gave up four runs in one inning before he was released. Feliz hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2017 before the two appearances this year.
Dodgers designate Steven Souza Jr, call up Jake Reed
MIAMI — The Dodgers designated Steven Souza Jr. for assignment and selected reliever Jake Reed’s contract.
Souza Jr., 32, joined the Dodgers last month and appeared in 13 games. He went 4 for 25 with one home run and one triple in 13 games.
The 28-year-old Reed signed a major-league contract with the Dodgers on June 4. He then pitched in nine games for triple-A Oklahoma City. He gave up three runs on 12 hits over 10 1/3 innings
The right-hander spent spring training with the Angeles before posting an 8.44 ERA in eight appearances for their triple-A affiliated. Reed first reached triple-A in 2016 but has yet to make his major-league debut.
Reed joins the Dodgers’ roster during an exhaustive stretch for the bullpen. A rain delay Saturday and a bullpen game Sunday forced the relief corps to cover 13 innings in less than 24 hours. The team is scheduled to deploy another bullpen game Wednesday against the Miami Marlins.

MIAMI — The Dodgers swapped left-handers Monday, activating Scott Alexander from the 60-day injured list and optioning Garrett Cleavinger to triple-A Oklahoma City.
Alexander, 31, hasn’t pitched for the Dodgers since May 1. He spent two months on the injured list with a shoulder injury. He gave up four runs — three earned — in 11 2/3 innings over 13 appearances before the setback.
Cleavinger, 27, was sent down after opening the Dodgers’ win over the Nationals on Sunday. He’s surrendered seven runs — three earned — in 13 1/3 innings across 15 outings.
Alexander joins the Dodgers as they try to extend their season-long winning streak to 10 games Monday against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.
They’ll face left-hander Trevor Rogers, who was named to the National League All-Star team Sunday, without Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy in the lineup. WASHINGTON — On a day Major League Baseball announced the reserves for the All-Star game, it was Albert Pujols — a 41-year-old future Hall of Famer signed two months ago as a platoon player six years removed from his 10th and likely final All-Star appearance — delivering the hit the Dodgers needed the most in their 5-1 matinee win Sunday over the Washington Nationals.
The score was tied when Dodgers manager Dave Roberts summoned Pujols, usually limited to at-bats opposite left-handers, to pinch-hit against right-hander Joe Ross. To that point, Ross was dealing, having just recorded his 11th strikeout. But Gavin Lux was at second base after a leadoff double and Pujols smelled the RBI.
He generated it by lining a sinker down the left-field line for a single to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Roberts had Tony Gonsolin, a pitcher, pinch-run for the slow-footed first baseman and the move proved prescient when Gonsolin scored from first base on Max Muncy’s double to the right-center field gap. Muncy added a two-run double in the ninth inning.
