HALFWAY — For Salvation Army Maj. Dan Heard, it just isn't Christmastime until he hears the ringing of the bells and sees the iconic red kettles outside stores throughout Washington County.

The Salvation Army's red kettle and angel tree campaigns kicked off Friday at Valley Mall, marking the beginning of the holiday season.

Last year, the red kettle campaign raised more than $91,000 in the area to help those in need. More than 2,000 area children were able to receive gifts in 2014, thanks to the kettle funds and the Christmas angel tree program.

The angel tree program allows members of the community to select an "ornament" from a tree that lists the age and the Christmas wish list of a child in need.

"Most everybody would agree that Christmas is just not Christmas to a child without a toy under the tree, a gift under the tree," Heard said. "There are many, many children who would not have a good Christmas without this program."

The kickoff event, which was held in the mall's food court, served as a time to celebrate the approaching holiday season and the spirit of compassion. Those who attended celebrated with music, prayer and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The red kettles can be found at about a dozen locations throughout the Hagerstown area, Heard said.

The kettle campaign will run through Dec. 24. This year, the group hopes to raise $95,000 to help others, he said.

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown donated the first $1,000 for the kettle campaign at the event.

Residents can select a name from the one of three angel trees at Valley Mall, Hagerstown Premium Outlets and the Hagerstown Wal-Mart. Names can also be drawn from The Salvation Army center in Hagerstown at 525 George St.

"Even in a challenging time, it seems people are always generous to helping families at Christmas," Heard said. "This kickoff is just a sign of Christmas beginning."

Katie Brigham, 8, was selected to cut the ribbon at the event and picked the first tag from the angel tree. Katie selected a 1-month-old infant, who is in need of baby shoes and toys.

Katie said while she was excited to get presents and money for Christmas, it felt "pretty great" to help others and be part of the kick off campaign.

Heard said The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers to ring bells and collect donations for the kettle campaign. Those who would like to volunteer for a full-day or half-day shift can call the center at 301-733-2440.
