The Amazing Spider-Man has broken box office records in the US.

The Andrew Garfield-led superhero movie debuted Stateside yesterday (July 3) to a $35 million opening haul, reports Deadline.

The total - aided by 3D ticket prices - shatters the record set by the first Transformers movie, which pulled in $27.8 million on July 3, 2007.

"That is one huge number," a Sony Pictures executive is quoted as saying. "Unbelievable start to what should be a very exciting six days."

Amazing Spider-Man also won approval from audiences, with market research firm CinemaScore revealing that the film has been given an 'A-' rating.

Tracking figures released last month claimed that the Marvel Comics adaptation was on course to deliver a $125 million six-day opening.
