Verna Ruth Markhardt Borgmann, 93, of White Lake, SD died Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 AM on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Verna was born on the farm in Gales Township on December 11, 1924 to William (Bill) and Minna (Suelflow) Markhardt. In 1931, her formal education began in the First Grade at St John's Lutheran School in Gales Township. In March of 1935, the family moved north to a farm in Pleasant Valley Township on which her nephew Richard (Dick) Markhardt and family still resides. She attended Longfellow School through the eighth grade. She graduated from White Lake High School in 1943 and attended Dakota Wesleyan to receive her teaching certificate.

Verna taught school for 5 years at the Sims and Longfellow Schools in Aurora County, the Thiry School in Brule County, and finally the 7th and 8th grades in Pukwana.

She married Glenn Borgmann, from Athol, Kansas, in St Martin's Lutheran Church in White Lake on October 30, 1949. In 1950, they started the family farm in Patten Township where she lived for 68 years. She became a resident of the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in December 2017 where she resided until her death.

She served on the Patten Township and the White Lake School Boards. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake and LWML, Lutherans for Life since 1994.

She is survived by her son Paul Borgmann and wife Janet, and two grandchildren Lindsay and Collin Borgmann of White Lake and her daughter, Col Ann Borgmann, (USAF Retired) residing in Linville, Virginia.

She is preceded in death by an infant brother Lowell in 1922, her parents, Bill in 1966, Minna in 1987, Glenn in 2000, her brother Merle Markhardt in 2004, sister-in-law Jackie Markhardt in 2016.
