Family Speaks Out After Girl Caught In Crossfire Of Baltimore Shooting

A 5-year-old girl is recovering from multiple surgeries at Shock Trauma after she was shot Monday during a shootout in west Baltimore.

Family members said the girl, Amy, is expected to be OK. She had been returning home from a neighborhood store.

“I’m sitting here waiting for her to come, I started hearing a ‘pow, pow, pow,'” said Vivian Nealy, Amy’s great-grandmother.

From her window, Nealy watched as Amy was caught in crossfire.

“She was running. She fell right there in the middle of the street. And I said, ‘Come on, Amy.’ She said, ‘I am coming, grandma.’ She said, ‘I can’t get up grandma.’ A guy ran over, picked her up and said, ‘She’s been shot,'” Nealy said.

Amy was shot in the back and a neighbor took her to Shock Trauma.

“The doctors made everybody smile because they said, when she came in, she was talking, so that was a good thing for us to hear,” said Tyshina Allen, Amy’s cousin.

“Every person around here knows this child. So she is well-known in the neighborhood, so it really bothers the whole community, not just because she’s a 5-year-old, but because she is a baby,” a neighbor said.

Her doll was left on McKean Avenue, where she fell, a heartbreaking image from yet another scene of gun violence.

“Can’t even go to the damn store. Don’t know if there is going to be a shooting. Can’t even sit on the steps. You just don’t,” Allen said.

A neighbor, Tyree, painted “no shoot zone” on the sidewalk where Amy was shot. It was the third he said he has painted related to Amy’s family.

“The very first no-shoot zone is down the street. It is for Marty. Marty is her cousin. No shoot zone 108 is for Taylor. Taylor is her stepsister. We have three no-shoot zones for one family,” Tyree said.

Tyree referred to Taylor Hayes, the 7-year-old girl fatally shot while riding in a car in southwest Baltimore in July. Taylor and Amy are half-sisters.

“I think that is a real tragedy, but it is more emblematic of the issues in some of our communities with the level of violence,” Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle said. “It just goes to show you some individuals don’t care who gets hurt, and it’s got to stop.”

Police said they have no solid leads in Amy’s shooting.

The city is sponsoring a community walk at the scene of the shooting Tuesday evening.
