There may be no spell check or the ease to attach your file to an email. Yet there's still something satisfying about tapping away on a typewriter.

Denver's Stories on Stage and Buntport Theater give a hats off to the typewriter in a new show next month. "A Typewriter Revolution" features poems and prose written on, for and about this antiquated mechanical contraption.

Stories on Stage artistic director Anthony Powell said modern technology often leaves him scratching his head. So when he came across articles about people returning to the typewriter, he was intrigued by the romanticism of it.

"Some of the nostalgia is well placed and some of it may be misplaced,” Powell said. “But on the other side of that kind of golden nostalgia is a kind of anger."

Maybe you can relate to this more antagonist relationship with tech -- that feeling of wanting to ditch your computer and word processor for analog.

"I'm done with computers and I want my privacy back and I'm going to type everything,” Powell said. “I think the two kind go nicely together. Two sides of the same coin."

The performance is in January, but from Dec. 13 - Jan. 5, Stories on Stage and Buntport have invited the public to join this "typewriter revolution." There are typewriters at the Tattered Cover bookstore on Colfax and at the Park Hill Library, where you can type up your own poem or short story. Buntport actors might end up performing your work onstage during the January show.

"Everybody has a story to tell and we're in the business of telling as many stories as we can," Powell said.

“A Typewriter Revolution” is Jan. 12, 2019 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center in Denver.
