A HORSE was rescued from a ditch by fire crews after it became stuck in Axbridge.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called at 6.33pm on May 7 to Bristol Road in Tarnock in Axbridge after a worried horse owner said their horse had become exhausted and was stuck in a water filled ditch.

Crews from Burnham on Sea and a specialist rescue crew from Bridgwater were immediately mobilised to the incident as well as an officer and a specialist rescue officer.

On arrival, crews found a large 21 year old horse measuring 14 hands high stuck in a ditch.

Two firefighters donned dry suits and were able to attach lines, straps and a rescue harness to the horse.

The horse was subsequently then pulled free of the water filled ditch unharmed and into the care of its owner.

Crews cleared away their equipment and left the scene at 7.30pm.
