New Zealand is not the first place people think of when they think of reggae music—it may not even be in the top 10. But that’s the unlikely point of origin for one of the most successful international reggae groups of the last decade, The Black Seeds. The band started in 1998 (with an original lineup that included future Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie) and built a steady following in its native country before breaking out in Europe with 2007 album Into the Dojo.
The Black Seeds’ music eventually made its way to U.S. listeners thanks to a timely song placement (for single “One by One”) in a 2009 episode of Breaking Bad and on the show’s soundtrack. Over time, the band has expanded on its roots reggae sound to include elements of funk, soul, rock and more, becoming a favorite at jam-oriented music festivals. Vegas is one of a handful of U.S. stops on the band’s current tour, giving American reggae fans a rare chance to catch the Black Seeds live without traveling abroad. From unlikely beginnings, this eclectic eight-member musical collective has brought its unique sound to the world.
