ESPN college football analyst and color commentator Kirk Herbstreit said Georgia’s best defense against Oklahoma — oddly enough — may be its offense.

The third-ranked SEC champion Bulldogs are set to face off against No. 2 Oklahoma and Heisman Trophy favorite Baker Mayfield in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 for a chance to play for a national championship.

Mayfield has been college football’s most impressive quarterback this season, guiding a high-powered Sooners offense to lead the nation in total yards (583.3 yards per game) and average close to 45 points per game.

“Really, I think the story of Jake Fromm and the Georgia offense, that ultimately could be the best defense against Baker — is to try to keep him on the sideline,” Herbstreit said in Atlanta earlier this week, according to a Dawgs247 article. “Because I think Georgia, offensively, no one really tends to talk about that side of the ball. They’ve got great balance and potential, and Oklahoma at times has played well and other times they’ve been very vulnerable. I think Georgia’s offense has a chance to be a big factor in that game.”

The Bulldogs offense hasn’t been stellar this season, but it hasn’t been shabby, either. The ‘Dawgs are No. 37 in the country in terms of yards per game (433.6) and No. 23 in points per game (34.9).

If Georgia can keep Mayfield and the rest of the Sooners’ offense off the field, it will certainly help its chances to move on to the national championship game.

“That’s the matchup maybe of the whole bowl season — watching Baker and that offense, scoring right now I keep saying like a video game,” Herbstreit said. “And here comes an SEC defense, and as you guys know Oklahoma is never short on opinion about how well the Big 12 can compete against the SEC. I think it will make for a lot of fun, a lot of build up.

“Athletically, I think this’ll be the toughest defense he’ll face. Roquan Smith and the whole attitude of that defense I think is outstanding.”
