Unconfirmed, but source says Buster Posey is on his way to San Francisco

A very good source just told me that the Giants will recall a position player before Saturday’s game and it will be none other than Gerald Demp “Buster” Posey.

This tip came to me after 11 p.m. and I haven’t been able to confirm it at this late hour. So please, please, please take it for what it is.

But if true, it makes complete sense.

Posey started at first base for the second consecutive time Friday night. Cuuurious. It’s a pretty safe assumption he was doing more than just resting his knees from catching. He was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI, lifting his PCL average to .349.

Plus GM Brian Sabean personally scouted Posey last week and told KNBR that “the kid’s really improving.”

Added Sabean: “But when we bring him here, we want to make sure he’s on the field at least five days a week.”

As you know, Posey is the Giants’ best position prospect since the days of Will Clark and Matt Williams.

I think Posey will get most of his starts at first base, with Aubrey Huff moving to left field. But Bengie Molina was hitless again Friday night and extended his streak to 19 games without an RBI. He’s hitting just .203 in May.

So Posey might steal a few starts behind the plate, too. But probably not when Jonathan Sanchez or Tim Lincecum is pitching.

It should be an interesting day.

A few other much less significant postgame notes…

–Freddy Sanchez reached safely in seven consecutive plate appearances before a fly out in the seventh inning. He also made several more defensive plays that won’t make the highlights, but were a little beyond routine. I had no idea that Sanchez would be playing this well just a week after his season debut. It’s definitely a good sign, as long as he remains healthy and on the field.

–Tim Lincecum worked on his slide step during his bullpen session today. He said everything went well, but I didn’t have a chance to stop him for more than a few seconds because he had to do a photo shoot after batting practice.

–It’s official: Lincecum will get Ubaldo Jimenez on Monday. I asked Bruce Bochy if facing the league’s top pitcher might be a good thing to sharpen Lincecum’s focus. Bochy said no, he wasn’t a big believer in that. Lincecum will be focused on the Rockies lineup, not the opposing pitcher. But I do think it might be a good thing, in a way. We know Timmy is capable of raising his game. It’s something he’ll have to do Monday.

–Jeremy Affeldt is improved but remained unavailable. He could be back on the “go” list Saturday, though. Whenever Affeldt is ready to pitch, the Giants will send out another reliever and add a position player.

And it’s looking like that will happen before Saturday’s first pitch.

  1. Anybody would be an upgrade over Molina no doubt. But it’s unlikely Gerald will make this team playoff worthy. I suspect Gerald Posey’s future will follow the path of the past great can’t misses – Lance Niekro, Damon Minor, Tony Torcato, and all the other terrific Sabean position player signings. Best case scenario, Gerald Posey would be a better hitting Kurt Manwaring minus Manwaring’s gold glove prowess. Chris Carter and Michael Taylor are much better prospects in my humble opinion. I trust Billy Beane WAY more than Sabean don’t you??? Sabean also has a nasty temper just listen to that hilarious interview with the Razor.

  2. This is excellent news! Big Fat crybaby Molina needs to go!

    Posey!!

  3. Buster Posey has come for your soooooooooooooooooooooouul!

  4. I can hear Molina crying now, I can’t wait to read his blog about this!

  5. YEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. i still don’t undertand why playing him at first base, taking away schierholtz’s at bats (bc you know rowand will not be sitting), and putting all of the pressure to make this team better on posey’s shoulders is a good idea right now.

  7. FINALLY! Hopefully they follow through on the “5 starts a week” thing. My preference is for him to full-time catcher, but with sabotchy at the helm, that’s unrealistic as long as Molina is still here.

  8. will saturday bring

    Torres – cf
    sanchez – 2b
    panda – 3b
    huff – lf
    uribe – ss
    posey – 1b
    molina – c
    nate – rf

  9. Posey will start more at first than at catcher. That’s just idiotic. SO MUCH FOR HIM NEEDING MORE SEASONING! Time for Buster to work on his scoops at first!

  10. 5 starts a week? get real what we are going to see is 5 starts a month. When was the last time a rookie got 5 starts a week? Holy crap I can’t remember….

  11. Nope Bengie, sit on the pine and watch Eli catch Sanchez like always =)

  12. Man!!! Sabean is a great GM. I’m so glad he’s making these shrewd moves like promoting the organizaations best hitter.

  13. Torres-CF
    Sanchez-2b
    Panda-3b
    Huff-LF
    Uribe-ss
    Posey-1b
    Sherholtz-Rf
    Whiteside-C

    Book it

  14. youre right, I had a brain fart and thought zito was pitching tomorrow.

  15. Finally!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to your new home Buster. It ought to fit nicely for the next 12 years. Everyone try to keep an open mind he will probably struggle some but once he figures it out here he will hit just like he has at EVERY level. The guy is a machine.

  16. So if Buster is takin the majority of at bats from 1st then that means that Aubrey Huff moves to left field.. Which begs the all important question… Where does that leave Pat Burrell!? I’m pissed that bringing up Posey is going to take away at bats from a crafty veteran like Burrell… SHEESH!

  17. Have I mentioned that my dog hates me? It’s one reason why I’m so bitter.

  18. #15 Jim— hope you’re right. It would be a nice surprise if Bochy sits Rowand!

Surprised they’re bringing him up before he becomes a Super-2. If it’s true, then kudos to the G’s.

Wonder what we can get for Bengie?

  19. I am glad to hear that Posey is on the way up, but I want to make sure he is up here to stay and he will get plenty of at bats this season.

I know many Giant fans are anxious for his big bat, but don’t look at Posey as being the answer to the Giants’s offensive woes…if Posey is everything baseball says he is, his impact will not be significant this season, but more for the upcoming season.

I wonder what the Giants are going to do with all these outfielders. I would imagine its going to severely impact Bowker and Schierholtz playing time, and its going to get worse if Burrell signs and DeRosa comes back. Its going to get interesting to say the least, Sabean better know what he is doing before he makes things worse.

  20. #12: maybe you have heard about Panda, Pablo Sandoval?

  21. very excited. Posey needs to be truely challenged to get better. He has no real challenge at the plate in AAA and it is time for him to start getting used to ML Pitching. I think there will be ups and downs like any youngster, but its nice that he will get a lot of those out of the way this season.

Rowand to the bench for a little while would be a solid move. Molina sent packing would be the best move this team could make. Maybe try to match up with a team that has a little something we could use in return.

Good luck Buster. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow…

  22. Posey will put together a good string of patient ABs, hit a couple balls hard, but go 1-12 and get benched the rest of the year.

    Am jaded/cynical?

  23. BOO!!! This is terrible news. What if Posey helps the Giants to win more games. As a loyal Giants fan, I speak for many when I say “Leave Posey in Fresno until after both Sabean and Bochy have been fired.” Sabean is only doing this in a last ditch effort to save his own neck. Posey is clearly not ready for the Major Leagues yet and he won’t be ready until we are rid of the Sabean/Bochy monster. I know that I see brown eye to eye with many of my fellow commenters that the overriding mission at hand is to rid the Giants of that evil duo. Bringing Posey up now just won’t cut it as far as our all-encompassing mission is concerned. We could be stuck with that gruesome twosome for years to come if Posey puts the Giants on his back and makes them competitive! WHAT TO DO! WHAT TO DO!! I hereby call an emergency meeting of the Fire Sabean fan club, with KENNY POWERS, our President, presiding; FIRE SABEAN, mouthpiece and secretary, taking minutes, and Yours Truly, BLEEDING HEMORRHOIDAL POLYP, performing excretory functions. The meeting will be held in the Mens Room, Section 220LL, AT&T Park @ 3:00pm SaTURDay, May 29, 2010. We will meet in the first Handicapped Stall on the right. There, we will discuss this latest underhanded move by Sabean and bounce our ideas for a counter-movement off the wall to see what sticks. All like-minded fans are invited to come in to float your ideas. Our mantra is LOSE TO WIN!

  24. this isnt about posey…this is about screwing nate

they made him play through an injury, when he shouldve been resting….and that has affected his swing

so instead of dfa’ing fat bengie (a monkey could catch timmy) they are gonna shift slow huff to left (which will now become doubles city) leave rowand in center and move torres to right

nate is now trade bait….cuz not getting alot of playing time at 26 years of age spells death to his career

he needs to pull lewis and have his agent demand a trade….this will put him on the outs with sabean, and he of course will be punished by extended time on the bench (which he was gonna get anyway) but maybe he can be gone from this ship of fools by the break

of course, sabean is also going after burrell, cuz this org doesnt have enough guys who cant play the field and are career 255 hitters

  25. #1, boy, oh boy, I sure hope you’re right about this! You give all of us in the Fire Sabean Fan Club reason for hope. Please come to our emergency meeting this afternoon to expand upon your ideas at length to our membership. You will find the particulars in my previous comment. I know I speak for the others when I say, “Welcome aboard! You’re one of us now!” LOSE TO WIN!

  26. Bowker had slightly better offensive numbers in AAA last year:

    .342 .451 .596 1.047 (avg obp slg ops)

than Posey has had this year in AAA:

    .349 .442 .552 .995 (avg obp slg ops)

The point I am trying to make is threefold:

    1. Bowker should have been given an everyday starting job this year in LF for at least half of the season to try and establish himself before benching him for struggling. He got to start for one game, after which he was immediately platooned, and he was benched in favor of Schierholtz/Torres within three weeks. His bat is as good if not better than Posey’s and he has a higher ceiling because he has more HR power. The Giants could still fix this by giving Bowker the starting LF job, but this will not happen now that Posey has been called up, which is silliness.

    2. Posey is actually more valuable as an overall player than Bowker, but only because he plays a position where good offensive players are scarce–catcher. Moving him to 1B is nonsense if it forces Bowker and/or Schierholtz to the bench because it is unlikely that Posey will be more of an offensive force than either Bowker or Schierholtz.

    3. The correct thing to do is to bring up Posey to replace Molina full time, although I would have waited two weeks so that Posey could avoid super two. Molina was below average last year both offensively and defensively, and this year he is flat out terrible. The other correct thing to do is to start Torrres in CF, Schierholtz in RF, Bowker in LF, and Uribe at SS. Rowand, Molina, and Renteria should all be pinch-hitters from today forward, although I would probably still start Rowand over Torres against an LHP.

  27. CF Torres
    2B Sanchez
    C Posey
    3B Sandoval
    1B Huff
    SS Uribe
    LF Bowker
    RF Schierholtz

    DO IT BOTCHY

  28. As much as I’d like to see Posey up, this doesn’t make sense at all. Now his service time starts. And what happened to all that “seasoning” he needed behind the plate? He needed two months of that to go play 1b? Might as well hold off ’till you’ve gained an extra year of arb. and play him at catcher at when he does come up. I don’t get it. Shows such a lack of plan by the organization.

  29. I know it’s a pipedream, but…..

I’m hoping that we’ve seen the last of Bengie Molina in a Giants uniform.

  30. Next…..

MadBum comes up….Welly to the long relief role.

  31. LOL SO Let me get this Straight
Now he is ready but two weeks ago he was not
Two weeks later he would not be a super 2 but we should not be pragmatic and save some money?
Rowland needs to sit down and.
    count his money
    Line up for Sat

    Torres
    Scherholtz
    Sanchez
    Panda
    Uribe
    Huff
    Posey
    Bowker

Molina and Rowland should be bench players and support the local economy with their paychecks.Neither would be in the lineup if they did not have huge embarassing contracts.Thank goodness Molina’s is only one year.

  32. Pardon my slang:
Despite his friendly hitting PCL stats Mr. Posey ain’t Prime Time ready to catch MLB pitching: PERIOD. Bowker is a 1B>IT. Politely stated Bowker’s OF fielding is suspect. Bonds at 40 was a better fielding OF than Bowker now. The Bowker faithful crowd refuses to accept that NOT to mention his inconsistent hitting due to poor plate disicipline and very prone to K’s because he’s vulnerable to breaking stuff in the DIRT>IT…
How about reading posts #: 62 and 64 of Baggs Thursday’s Giants line-up?
    Take-off your blinders…

  33. How typical that exciting news is met with cynicism from this board. We’ve been waiting for this all spring and people want to get fussy over the situation.

Somebody on here said Bowkers AAA #’s last year were better than Posey’s this year implying equivalent ability. By that logic, we should get Joe Borchard up here also.

Even if the Giants don’t win the World Series this year, it will be an exciting season to follow. Madison Bumgarner should be here soon. If Pat Burrell can come to Fresno, get reinvigorated by the PCL pitching, and provide RH power off the bench for league min, then great. In the event that doesn’t work out, there should be an outfielder available at the trade deadline that will be an upgrade over whoever is not hitting. Toss in a set up guy and this team will be competing for a playoff spot.

Come 2011, gear up for a run at Carl Crawford and the arrival of Neal, Kiescnick, Ford, B. Crawford.

    Get excited, or get out.

  34. How does this effect Posey’s super 2 status Baggs?

  35. #30 Leon–

Posey, right away in the 3 hole huh? Hmmm… Maybe we ought to think about, oh I dunno, perhaps not putting too much pressure right away on BUSTER POSEY, THE SAVIOR OF THE FRANCHISE

  36. #37 bradley–

It blows it. Frankly I am puzzled why they would do this now and not wait 2 more weeks. We’re finally getting some production out of the top half of the lineup and getting enough runs to win some games… Doesn’t really make sense to me.

  37. Hey, maybe the tip was wrong and they’re not really going to bring him up today… Perhaps we shouldn’t get too excited just yet. Let’s wait and see what today’s lineup is; I’ll believe it when I see it.

  38. It’s amazing how many posters seem to think this is a minor league training situation for young players. This is a major league team with a chance to win a division. You don’t give some rook who hit well one year in AAA a starting job for “at least half a season” or worry about which of your various young AAAA outfielders might get offended by bringing up a prospect or signing a veteran. If you’re that weak, you don’t belong anyway.

Bowker earned nothing. Nate hasn’t yet either, but he’s earned much more.

Posey, well I don’t want him as a full-time catcher yet after reading what Decker had to say about his progress. It’s the team that matters.

  39. 1st off we’re not the Marlins, we have nine dollar beer, and Money. Edgar and Benji are off the books. Rowands close (2 yrs) til he’s done, isn’t that super? Fact it’s perfect time. I’m sure 2 of those guys are not being retained. There is not a lot of SS free agents in 2011, so..that’s a hole to fill unless Uribe can do it. Rowand would need to hit like Barry Bonds to get an extention. Molina I don’t see getting a contract. That’s when Poser plays catcher full time. This way he can get a litttle time in this season @ catching. Well..I’m wanting to buy this anyway

  40. A trade that should be made. Sabean would be embraced by fans, and could be the nexus for that elusive play off spot:Rowand for two players “to be named whenever”Giants will buyout Rowand’s contract plus throw in a 5 million finders fee…….it’s a win win deal for Sabean

  41. Although Molina is a problem Posey needs to play firstbase for now. He can catch in winter ball to hone his skills. His PCL numbers mean nothing, just ask Bowker.

  42. Man, I just love Sabean and the great moves he makes:
    1. After leaving his best catcher in Fresno for two months, he’s bringing him up just in time to be a SuperTwo.
    2. He’s converting him to a first baseman.
    3. He’s signing Pat Burrell, a player whom FanGraphs describes as “a washed up hitter who can’t play the field.”
    4. Because Sabean can’t understand and doesn’t trust statistics, he’s making his decision based on watching Posey for a couple of games.
    5. He’s postponing DeRosa’s surgery as long as possible, so DeRosa can continue to be a huge liability for perhaps as long as the rest of the season.

  43. To clarify, the bad Renteria/Molina contracts aren’t even in the same solar system of stink as Rowand’s.

Rowand’s is for 5 years with 2 more left at $26M
Renteria’s was for 2 years and is done at the end of this year.
Molina’s was for 1 and done at the end of this year.

Rowand is clearly a problem going forward. His career, such as it ever really was, is likely over.

Rowand’s like a bad toupee…..it needs to come off NOW. You know it’s the reason you’re not getting any chicks, and you know by ripping it off you’ll face some enhanced ridicule for a brief period of time (similar to Nelson on the Simpsons saying, “Ha Ha!), but being bald is at least being honest…..and some chicks dig honesty. But knowing Sabean, he’ll go back to the same toupee shop and say, “Gimmee the works!”

  44. Rowand’s contract is only five years? It seems like a century.

  45. aGiantman,
If you compare one season yes you could say that Bowker and Posey are similar. But look at their entire minor league career and you can see how different they really are. At every level Podey had a better AVG, OBP and SLG. Bowker was prone to huge years and mediocre years. Big ups then downs. Bowker was inconsistent. Posey is a hitter. He was in college, A, AAA and he will be in the majors. He will go through some slumps he may take some time to adjust but he is far more of a pure prospect than either Schierholtz or Bowker.

As far as Schierholtz losing AB’s that is all on Sabean and Nuekum. It’s the $$$ if Nuekum tells Sabes that they can eat the money any rational person would bench Rowand. He is AWFUL out there. But it isn’t going to happen. Why will Posey be treated different than Bowker and Nate? Omce again it’s the money. Didn’t they give him a huge signing bonus. When the owners give a kid millions they don’t want to see him jerked around.

Go Giants!!!!!!!!! I am really excited about seeing Buster, hopefully Sabean wasn’t lying and we will see him 5 days a week.

  46. Bowker has had time and is still getting time at playing for a spot. Same thing for Nate. Bowker has power,Nate is hitter w D-fence. Neither are stand outs or consistent at the plate. I like Huff-LF Torres-CF Nate-RF +Rowand traded for cash.

  47. Wow! I didn’t think this would happen for a few more weeks, but Molina looked terrible last night and we know the Giants are getting heat from their investors about bringing the kid up. We need his bat in the lineup right now – not enough right handed batters (Sanchez excepted) are producing. Rowand and Molina are almost automatic outs.

I agree with GaryG that this is strange given all they’d save if they brought Posey up a week or so later. But we need him on this team, and Sabean has consistently said that he won’t pay attention to the arb clock when evaluating talent.

Excited for Posey time. Timmy will come around and Eli will continue to be the Sanchez pc

  48. Bowker is not an mlb OF, and hasn’t hit well enough to play regularly. Nate is a singles hitting OF who runs well, has a good arm, but makes dumb plays in the OF. Huff is better than either of them, and so is Torres. Posey, no brainer compared to these two. Rowand we are stuck with, but at least he is near bottom of the order.
If Molina continues to go south, Posey could play there too soon enough, Benjie can ride off into the sunset, and Whiteside (ugh) can catch a game or two. I don’t really care how well he hits–he is not here to save the team. The vets and the pitching staff will determine whether SF wins it all or not.

  49. You think Posey will get rowand out of the lineup……..I doubt it,more likely this means schirholtz and Bowkers window of opportunity is closed. If Botchey had 8 Buster Poseys one would be on the bench to keep the “gamer” in there.

  50. I’m nervous. Any changes that might result in Rowand’s .231 BA & .265 OBP playing less isn’t good. Remember, Sabean signed him for the intangibles he brings to the club. Sabes knew his stats wouldn’t sparkle, but his attitude alone was worth $12M per season. Typically, Rowand begins to swoon the final 3 months of the season, this year he’s getting an early start. Man, all his off season bike riding is really paying dividends isn’t it? Perhaps Neukom is looking at all those empty seats and decided Sabean needed to add Posey to the squad.

  51. #51 it’s messy–
Who out there is gonna pay any cash for Rowand?

  52. So do you know who giants sent down to bring up posey? Is that the end or ishikawa because he was out if minor league options? Did they designate him for assignment?

  53. If Sabean personally scouted him again. . . . watchout! It’s the Bumbling Gnats once again.

  54. they’ll send down the 13th pitcher, since Affeldt is available again

  55. This organization never ceases to suprise me . . .

There is little justification to bringing Posey up within a few weeks of his Super 2 date. I’ve heard and read that the date is not fixed, but I am sure it can be calculated to some extent. Unless it is closer to a month away than a few weeks, I am stumped.

Calling him up means virtually eating the rest of Molina’s deal (I am thinking that missed pop up last night had BS pick up the phone to Fresno). That I have no problem with. It was expected. Yet, if Posey is so close to Super 2, some 5 million dollars is another quality players contract. The crux of what I am saying: You either bring Posey up a month ago or you wait for super 2.

For the record, I was calling for a Bengie trade over a month ago before he was hurt (.380 avg) for a top prospect from one of the AL clubs hurting for catching. Posey would have come up back then to learn from Whiteside. Now, I guess it is possible the Super 2 date is already here. I hope so, or they made another mistake. It’s about getting the most out of your moves.

I don’t expect anyone will get on Posey when he struggles early, but if anyone is tempted, let’s put the bar at Bengie’s production for the last month, complete with passed balls, no arm, and missed pop ups.

  56. Molina has given the GMen plenty. Oaktown needs a real life and stop thinking anybody cares about his black clouded, pessimistic views. What a jerk. Go ask your A’s if they’d like to have “Gerald” on their roster, jerk. Or some fans to go watch your team play. Too bad only 12K saw a perfect game. What a waste.

  57. Wow, there is alot of Rowand and Molina bashing from Giants fan going on here, and frankly its very sad to read. While both players are not doing so well at the plate, you are crazy if you think the Giants front office is going to dfa them or bench them. The pitchers like Bengie and he has a one year contract, he is going to be the starting catcher probably for the remainder of the year…unless they trade him. Also, don’t forget the last three years he and Pablo carried our team offensively (regardless the offense being horrible) Yes Rowand is terrible at the plate and has a large contract (but don’t forget the Giants gave him just a little above market value when they signed him) and he belongs at the bottom of the lineup, he is a good defender and he covers an outfield that is extremely hard to defend. He is not going anywhere either.

I think the Giants need to cut ties with Renteria, he can’t stay healthy and he is taking up an infield roster spot (eat the rest of the contract). Bowker seems to work best in a pinch hit/platoon situation, but he hasn’t shown the stuff to be an every day starter. I like Mark DeRosa determination, but I think its best for the team if gets his surgery now and prep for next year. The only one getting screwed in this is Nate Scheirholtz, he deserves more AB and he keeps getting benched. Its a shame because he is starting to have a breakout year. Pat Burrell is only going to make the outfield much more crowded.

Its amazing how a slump can turn from a hero into a villain through the eyes of a fan…. Go Giants!!!!

  58. I agree with you, cow. If Posey comes up just days short of his Super-2 elibility date, I think I’ll be sick…

I just listened Ralph Barbieri’s interview with Sabean from the other day. Ralph challenged him directly about how Zito’s contract (and ones like it) affects the ability to sign higher-priced FA’s. Sabean flat out denied that money has anything to do with who they’ll sign. Really!

So, the Giants are so cavalier about money that they’ll risk having to pay an extra $5mil (guessing here) a year earlier, just to get Posey in the lineup maybe a week or so earlier.

    I don’t get it…

  59. Matt, I have to diasgree with your post. I can understand all three of your positions (defend Rowand and Molina, burn Rent), but I think your letting emotion win that argument.

Rowand and Molina are pretty much done. Only off days and a new location will bring them around. I’ll give you that Rowand WILL have a hot strek or two in him, but the cost will be pretty high. Molina needs to be sent to a contended like the Red Sox. They’ll take him, use him correctly, and probably get good numbers out of him. Too bad we can’t justify asking for much. They’ll take his contract and give up a peon from the minors, nothing more now that he looks beleaguered out there.

Yet, if you are going to argue any one of the three should remain, Rent would be the one. If the club can actually wait until he is healthy to plug back in the lineup, he contributes with his bat and reasonable defense. No one will trade for Rent. And as for roster spot, he either stays on the DL or plays.

Much like I think of this Posey decision, the Giants need to chose their path and stick to it. Either cut him lose or wait until he is healthy (how about a rehab assignment this time?). If they plug him into the lineup early again, we’ll get 3 days to a week before he hurts his legs again. I am betting his groin, as that was the last injury before this hamstring, and they are probably not paying attention to it while they work the hammy.

While I agree with you it is a bit sad to harp on any player, I don’t mind calls for the heads on millionaires. When it comes to the young guys making the minimum, I’d prefer to read “he’s not ready” instead of “he sucks.” The rich guys . . . eh, . . . they can consider it part of the job.

  60. last night the game was epic. everyone spot on. my love for big mo has waned since he began this “i don’t care” mentality. whiteside has shown again and again he’s got mad skills, and just like the rest of them his bat has shown it can do grand things it just needs to find it’s place again. i want to see way more of him. if posey is indeed up i don’t think it’s for the best. after all giants fans have made him into some sort of baseball masiah. the expectations on a kid are too much, especially one who hasn’t had the time he needs to get his game honed. look at the expectations of our golden boy timmy. his stuff is off for a couple of games and people are stunned and begging for answers.
don’t let posey be a saviour in your minds.

  61. More on the Sabean interview (you can hear it on the KNBR website on the Razor and Mr. T page): Sabes kept saying how he had no problem with taking responsibility as the GM, and that he could “take the heat,” was used to it and was a “big boy.”

Yet he got extremely testy with Ralph, who was persistently challenging him on why the offense hasn’t improved any since Bonds left the team.

It sure didn’t sound like he was “taking the heat” very well at all to me. Sounded more like he just wanted Ralph to shut up.

  62. Well sometimes you buy it and wear it (zito). That seems to be working out.. Now!. Rowand I thought was comming around but….since the Padillawad head hunting day. He’s playing like 07-08 Start a poll let the people speak all century dumbshit moves. Will Clark was plugged in 1986 & put up comparable #’s of what Bowker did his rookie season. However Will came back in 87 and blossomed, and John is batting .212 which is up from .192 in ’09.. I think 350 PA were enough to see he’s a low Avg,low OBP, high k rate, 10-20 hrs guy. Maybe he gets better but right now he is the same player from ’08. Bowker needs to just play good and he could take 1B next year.

  63. Jimenez served up Barry Bonds’ 762nd & final career home run, but also no-hit a Braves team that could have swept the Giants at AT&T in April.

  64. So, someone trusts Billy Beane more than Brain Sabean. Wasn’t it Billy Beane who traded Andre Eithier to the Dodgers for Milton Bradley? Great going Billy Beane. In case you haven’t noticed, Eithier is one of the up and coming stars in baseball and it is very hard for me to give credit to a Dodger.

  65. A shout out to Huff. I have become a real fan of his. He looked pretty good in LF the other night, too. Sabean picked a good one there.

I love the emotion he shows on questionable calls. While you don’t want to show up the Ump, I think most see it is his genuine suprise by calls as opposed to anger or a classic “show up” stare.

I wonder what an ump thinks when he watches the replay later and sees, like last night, Huff losing it because a strike was called that inside by 4+ inches and low. That’d make for good reality TV – watching umps watch their bad calls. Somebody make a pitch to mlb.com.

They say Posey spends time at 1B. I am ok with that while they work the phones to trade Big Molasses, but he needs to be catching, 1B for Whiteside’s starts if they must. If Bengie is still here in two weeks and Posey is playing 1B while losing Super 2 eligibility, I’ll be angry as all hell, but not one bit suprised.

Last, let’s hope Ish gets picked up by a contender and gets time as a defensive replacement in playoff games. We know you tried, Travis.

  66. Last night was the 58th anniversary of Willie Mays’ first major league hit: a home run after going 0-12. Get it.

  67. Burrell’s deal is the right handed bat with possible power and only cost 1/2 a games worth in beer sales. Too cheap to pass up even if he does end up suckin. Maybe he turns it around like Huff. Rather have Burrell PH than Rollinger/Downs.

  68. #62 Matt and #66 WC–
I lean more toward WC’s position here. With Posey up, Molina is basically done as a Giant. They need to trade him to an AL team (Red Sox might indeed be a good possibility) before Renteria comes off the DL.

Posey ultimately needs to be our catcher. Molina would be worthless as a “mentor;” Whiteside is the right guy for that role. (BTW I bet Whiteside will probably be an ML manager someday)

I think we’ve gotta get rid of Molina. If Posey’s at 1B and Renteria’s back at SS, who’s gonna sit? Uribe? Torres? Sanchez? Panda? Oh yeah, Rowand… can’t sit him… so Molina’s got to go. Addition by subtraction. (Then when Renteria gets hurt again we can get Schierholtz back in the lineup)

Once we get Posey at C and Renteria back at SS, it looks like we need to start getting used to seeing Huff in LF…

  69. Well said Matt. Let’s hope Panda is comiing out of his slump and yesterday was not an aberration. For all the Sabean bashers, he should get some credit for Freddy Sanchez and Huff. Derosa should get his surgery now and be ready for next year. Wrist recovery is difficult. If healthy he is a pro and will be an addition (admission…I went to Penn). Rowand has never been able to get AT&T out of his head and I doubt he will. His biggest down side is that he is likely to get in the way of Schierholtz’s developement. I would split the catching between Posey and Molina. Posey can catch Zito who calls his own game and Cain. Sanchez probably needs a vetern to keep him focused and Tim likes pitching to Molina.

  70. Hey Sarge… I can’t find the posts you keep referring to, #62 & 64 on the Thursday lineup blog… that blog only has 63 posts anyway; I looked at the others and can’t find anything from you there. Wanted to check what you were talking about…

BTW, Franchez actually plays for Frisco…
    (sorry, couldn’t resist!)

  71. Rowand and Molina have been automatic outs this month. Time to bench both of them for the sake of the team.

  72. What an idiotic move… 6 days before he is no longer going to be a super 2, I pray this is wrong. It would be a horrific move

  73. Steve:
Hold tight give me a couple of mins.
    Thnx

  74. now, its up to bochy to start him. wonder if that’s a sure thing?

  75. sabean, now lets trade for lance berkman ad the division is ours!

  76. Schierholz is batting .291 compared with Rowand at .231. And Schierholz has speed and a strong arm in right.

  77. I find the hatred of Bejie amusing, especially when both Lincecum and Cain voluntarily sing his praises on a regular basis. Cain as recently as last night.

I guess it’s a sad state of affairs when the Giants’ two best pitchers know less about the value of a catcher than the experts on this blog know.

Lincecum and Cain should both be fired, since they are clearly clueless idiots.

  78. SF Giants seem to have difficulty breaking the shackles of traditionally trying to win with power over defense, small ball production, and speed on the bases. The biggest mistake would be to waste Buster Posey’s ability by playing first base. This in my mind would be larger travesty than the Joe Nathan for A.J. Pierzynski trade.

With Molina already talking retirement, who will compliment the outstanding pitching in the future? If management brings Buster up now, he will ultimately become a utility player. His bat will not be the difference maker for this offence. Giant management should allow him to develop and become a top tier catcher. However Giants track record indicate they will likely to bring Buster up and over pay for a veteran catcher on the downward side of his career.

Sabean should admit error regarding DeRosa health issues, send him to the DL, and allow him to get the needed surgery to regain his form. The last thing this offensively challenged team needs is to be carrying someone that is expecting to hit for power but cannot. Giants must take advantage of their ballpark. They should get young, athletic players, with defensive skills that can hit for percentage, over power, and have speed on the bases.

  79. #87 FLC–
Nah. I don’t think it will take Lincecum and Cain long to get used to pitching to Posey; they will be able to see the advantage of having him on the team. There just isn’t room on the roster for both him and Molina; between the two, it’s no contest who should stay.

  80. Sarge… That’s OK. Actually, it might be easier if you just highlight the URL, copy it and paste it into the blog.

I’ll check it out in a bit.

  81. Amazing, so many think Posey will a savior…He’ll mostly be playing 1st base and I wouldn’t expect a single thing from some any minor league kid going against big league pitching, especially with all the hype and pressure so many of you are expecting of him….

He can also easily be a big flop (and then you’ll hear the same know-nothings screaming)….as Sabean said, “the kid is improving” not that the kid is Superman…Lots of armchair baseball out there rookies who don’t know Jack….Give the kid some more time, and he just might prove to be a “Clark” or “Williams” – which would be an excellent ball player – not a superstar….

At this point, I would take a good sound consistent bat & player in the everyday lineup and I would be happy…and hopefully the kid in time has it in him to evolve into a very good player or better!

  82. SBSteve, TY, I had been wanting to ask about those for day and a half, but it would have been taken starting a fight no matter how I brought it up. Ooops, this probably did.

  83. I’m amazed at how smart you all try to sound when in reality there’s hardly a drop of intelligence among you.

Posey is not be brought up to “take” Molina’s spot. Wish as hard as you want, but it ain’t going to happen.

Posey is being brought up to light a fire under Molina by providing competition and the threat of taking his job. It’s the same exact move the Giants made last year (and it worked) and it’s the same exact move they made in spring training when they gave Nate’s starting job to Bowker (which kinda sorta worked, but 1 HR from Nate is Randy Winn-like in its absurdity).

Prediction: If Posey can do anything decent with the bat, it will wake Molina up and he will start producing like he’s expected to produce.

And, sorry to tell you Sabean-hating, veteran-hating, the-unknown-is-better-than-the-known, I-sit-on-my-ass-and-manage-from-the-Internet idiots, but having two guys producing is a LOT better for the Giants overall than having one guy take another guy’s job.

  84. I should never read the comments on a Giants-related article, but I did…It seems like far too many Giants fans have forgotten just how bad this team has been for the last six years.

Bengie Molina can’t hit and can’t throw any runners out…And he has a bad attitude. He absolutely did not carry this team’s offense. Aaron Rowand was a terrible signing – Sabean saw him have a career year and paid through the nose for it. Zito, of course, is an 8.0 disaster on the Richter Scale. All of these failures were sadly predictable – but Sabean doesn’t even realize they were failures.

Aubrey Huff is not a good player. John Bowker was in A-ball when he was Posey’s age, so comparing their stats from last season makes no sense.

But hey, attendance is only down 10% compared to WS team. Until the revenue really drops, Sabean will still have his job.

  85. We were watching the game with the volume muted last night when Molina overran what appeared to be a fairly routine popup by the Giants dugout. They showed the replay a few times and we unmuted just in time to hear a pissed-off Krukow say “wake up!” We couldn’t figure out if he was calling out Molina for not catching it or calling out the scorekeeper for giving Molina an error even though he never touched the ball.

Anybody watching at that time who heard the context?

  86. As usual Sabean has a traffic jam, why he waited so long for Posey is beyound me.
Rowan is pure defense for now,5 years with 2 to go. .Sabean can really do it-must of thought he was the reincarnation of Willie Mays-

If Molina comes out of his slump ,he should be traded -to REd Sox-they wanted him-

Bring up Baum-the pitcher -put Wellemeyer as long relieve-
and get Somebody to hit sac flies off the bench-

Looks like next year will be the year-Sabean & Bochy messed up this one-its like a fire drill-nobody knows what to do-except Molina and Rowand-they just keep making outs with men on base.

Well, let´s try to enjoy the rest of the season and pray for a miracle.

  87. If Posey lights it up: “Sabean is such an idiot for not bringing him up sooner”

If Posey sucks: “Bochy is such an idiot for not putting him the correct spot of the batting order”

If the Giants continue losing: More whining

If the Giants start winning: More whining

  88. #94 Steve:
Go to my #90 post and click on the link included. It works and it includes my#62 and the #64 post I had been referring to.
    Thanks

  89. #94 Steve:
    Read carefully:
At the top YES it says that it has 63 comments, disregard that and SCROLL ALL the way DOWN and you’ll find out that it has 65 posts.
    Sargento

  90. Sarg, I think that may be only on your computer, mine only goes to #63 when I scroll. Perhaps it is a cookied file or something (I don’t know the internet for crap. It plays tricks on me, too).

Muted, Kruk was talking about the error, which was bogus. I honestly don’t know why the rules are as they are, though. It was a pretty bad misread by Big Molasses. I am thinking the wind grabbed it right when he looked away from it, at best. I guess the scorer felt it was like a grounder that a player completely lets go through his legs without getting a glove on it, eh?

Honest Q, sarg. What are your thoughts on that issue? Not Bengie’s play exactly, but terrible plays that should be considered an error in that 99% of players would make it, but say a OF ends up so far from the ball it doesn’t get an error. I lean towards it being weak to charge a pitcher with an earned run when a players screwed up.
