Manayunk/Roxborough Community Joins With Police In Attempt To Control Drunken Partying At This Weekend's Bike Race

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- State troopers will join Philadelphia police for a second year in an enhanced effort to curtail drunken rowdiness at Philadelphia's pro-cycling race on Sunday.

Members of the Roxborough/Manayunk community have been concerned for years that the crowd gathering along the Manayunk Wall for the race was getting out of control with unruly house parties, public urination, and underage drinking. So a group called the Bike Committee--made up of business, civic, police and others--was organized to make the event more family friendly.

"We plan for this throughout the year, and we know the party houses, and we have been around to them throughout the year letting them know what they can or cannot do," says Lt. Michael Payne, with the 5th Police District.

State troopers will be out—both uniformed and plain clothes—with Philadelphia officers on duty too. And returning for a second year, a special bike race court has been set up where those arrested could find themselves in front of a judge before they know it and slapped with fines and or days of community service.
