Sunday’s support card for the two Group One races wasn’t particularly strong but there were some performances worth following from a couple of lightly raced Class Four types.

The Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained Handsome Bo Bo is one of them after registering his maiden win in the fourth race over 1,200m.

Only a three-year-old, the son of Helmet has now had a win and a fourth from his two race appearances despite coming up with very wide barriers.

At his first outing, he went with Eighty Eighty in front after crossing early and was still there until the final metres then he again had to do work at both ends on Sunday. Zac Purton bounced him out of gate 12, crossed the field to lead and dictate but, with a run under the belt, he was a little tougher this time. The youngster gave a comprehensive kick at the business end of the race to win by just under a length in what was a very encouraging effort.

He stays in Class Four after the rehandicaps on Monday and will comfortably handle the raise in weight if he manages to get a look at an inside draw for a change.

Midfield in the same race and not nearly as well-mannered at this stage was Little Bird, from the Ricky Yiu Poon-fai yard.

A half-brother to Otouto – OK, he probably keeps that to himself – Little Bird was having his first run and had been very green in his barrier trials which nevertheless still included a pretty solid second to the handy Silver Fig.

Again on Sunday, under race conditions, Little Bird was green and really didn’t give much of an impression that he knew what the game was about.

He drifted into a midfield position wide with cover and was a little bit keen at stages but managed to take a length off the winner in the run down the home straight.

By Starcraft, he is going to come on in leaps and bounds for that experience and, when the penny drops, he should pay his way over further than the 1,200m of Sunday’s race.
