Man airlifted to Wausau after head-on collision

A head-on collision was reported at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Luxmore Street in Ironwood at 12:58 p.m. on Tuesday.

When officers from the Ironwood Public Safety Department arrived, Beacon Ambulance was already on scene assisting a male victim. Several passersby also stopped to assist.

Preliminary investigation shows that one vehicle failed to yield causing the crash.

The driver of the first vehicle was transported to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital and later airlifted to Aspirus Wausau hospital with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. At the time of this report, his condition is unknown.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle declined transportation to a hospital, but stated they would seek their own medical attention. Their injuries did not appear to be serious.

Names are being withheld pending notification of family members and further investigation.

Part of U.S. 2 remained closed for about five hours while Public Safety Evidence Technicians and an accident investigator from the Michigan State Police, Wakefield Post, collected evidence. The scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m. when Lahti's Towing and Ramme's Towing removed both vehicles.

Ironwood Public Safety was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Beacon Ambulance, Lahti Towing, Ramme Towing and City of Ironwood Department of Public Works.

Irowood Public Safety is also thankful for the citizens who stopped to assist.

"We would also like to thank the citizens who stopped to render aid to the victims of the accident. We were not able to get the names due to the officers need to assist, but your willingness to help did not go unnoticed," the Ironwood Public Safety release said.
