Officers Tuesday afternoon charged a Marlborough man with assault and battery after he allegedly threw a handful of pennies at a passing car in Westborough in what police call a road rage incident.

Police said a witness told officers that Shane Sullivan, 17, of 87 Leolis Drive, Marlborough, who was also charged with possession of marijuana, threw the coins at the witness's vehicle as the car Sullivan rode in passed by on East Main Street.

According to police, the coins struck a passenger in the side of the face as she rode in the witness's car.

Police charged the driver of the car in which Sullivan was a passenger, Pedro H. Trovo, 20, of 237 Brigham St., Marlborough, with driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.

Police said Trovo sped up right behind the witness's car coming west on East Main Street, almost hitting it. He then went around the witness and braked suddenly, nearly causing another collision.
