A former prison guard has been found guilty of trying to blow up her ex-husband, also a prison officer, after he fell asleep in his car.

The NSW District Court found Sharon Yarnton, 50, and her accomplices Monique Hayes, 26, and Fady Houda, 25, guilty of plotting to kill Dean Yarnton in the passenger seat of his ute in February 2015.

Mr Yarnton, who had been sedated by his ex-wife, woke up to a hissing gas bottle in the back seat of his car at Picnic Point, about 23km from Sydney's south-west.

As he got out of his Nissan Navara he stood in a puddle of petrol. There was another gas cylinder on the ground and a silver car was driving away.

'I'm happy it's all over. It's probably taken a while to get where we have got,' Mr Yarnton said after the conviction.

'I feel sorry for my kids. They're hurting... I gotta show them a bit of support now,' he told Nine News.

Earlier, Mr Yarnton had said that when he got out of the parked ute, he'd called his wife, who had been driving him home from dinner but was nowhere in sight.

'I said "Where the f*** are you?' I said 'What the f***'s going on here?'' Mr Yarnton said.
