Our sister publication in Reno is reporting that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's wife and daughter were injured in a car crash. The Reno Gazette-Journal says the injuries "don't appear to be life threatening." There are no other details.
The paper quotes spokesman Jon Summers as saying:
Today Senator Reid's wife, Landra, and daughter, Lana, were involved in an accident in which their vehicle was rear-ended. They are both being treated at a Washington-area hospital.
Reid met his wife in high school and they were married in 1959. Lana is the couple's only daughter. They also have four sons, including Rory Reid, who is running for governor of Nevada.
Updated at 6:05 p.m. ET. The Associated Press is reporting that Reid's wife broke her back and neck. She is 69 years old.
Updated at 6:23 p.m. ET. Reid's office just put out a statement. It says the Reids' car was "rear-ended by a semi-truck" on a Washington, D.C., highway. It goes on to say:
Mrs. Reid has a broken nose, broken back and broken neck. Lana has a neck injury and facial lacerations. Both Mrs. Reid and Lana are conscious, can feel their extremities, and according to doctors their injuries are non-life threatening. Senator Reid has been to the hospital and appreciates the support he and his family are receiving from Nevadans and his colleagues in the Senate.
