Will Jay-Z and Beyoncé Attend the Met Gala?

Fashion’s biggest night is arguably the Met Gala, where designers bring their celebrity dates to step out in custom high-fashion looks and, most importantly, ring in the latest exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. This year’s show? It’s called “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and the event is scheduled for Monday, May 7.

Let’s be real, though. The main reason everyone cares about the occasion is the red carpet, where Sarah Jessica Parker tends to arrive in headdresses and Rihanna shuts down the show in floor-grazing, enormous gowns. Each year, we’re impressed with what the stylists and designers who dress celebrities put their muses in, but we’ve missed one couple for the past two years: Jay-Z and Beyonce. Will the married pair finally show up to this year’s ball?

The famous couple’s presence at the event is by now headline-making news, and a Met Gala highlight. Need a refresher? They’ve been hitting up the party for years, and they’ve looked absolutely fabulous, however, nothing will ever top what went down in 2014. That year changed the way we perceived their love for each other, and made us realize it’s not always rainbows and butterflies in Hollywood.

While we may never know exactly what went down, here’s what we do know: After the gala, the couple headed to N.Y.C.’s Standard Hotel for the official after-party. Sounds fun, right? Well, TMZreleased footage of Solange, Beyonce’s younger sister, throwing jabs at Jay in the elevator, while a security officer stood by and tried to stop her. Beyoncé famously didn’t move to stop Solange, and the two left in a separate car as soon as they walked out the elevator. Jay-Z was escorted to a different vehicle.

Shortly after, they released a joint statement to the Associated Press addressing the altercation. “As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family,” the statement read.

“The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

But what was the Met Gala drama all about? The fight eventually led to years and years of speculation about Jay-Z’s rumored infidelity and cheating, which Beyoncé addressed in her surprise album, Lemonade, and which Jay-Z addressed on 4:44 and in various interviews since.

According to ABC News, Beyoncé also tried to squash the drama in an interview with Lucky. “What we had to say collectively was in the statement that we put out, and we all feel at peace with that,” she said. She also addressed the fight in the remix to “Flawless,” singing, “Of course, sometimes s— go down when there's $1 billion on an elevator.”

In 2017, Jay-Z talked about his relationship with Solange in an interview on Tidal’s Rap Radar. “We’ve always had a great relationship,” he said. “We’ve had one disagreement. Before and after, we’ve been cool … That’s my sister. Not my sister-in-law, no, my sister. Period.”

Since 2014, the couple has of course returned to the party, with no mention of their incident. Beyoncé hit the Met Gala red carpet in a totally see-through Givenchy dress in 2015, and in 2016 wore latex for the cameras, also in Givenchy.

In 2017, neither Jay-Z or Beyoncé attended the event. The reason? We’re not quite sure, but Beyoncé was pregnant with twins Rumi and Sir Carter at the time, and it's understandable that she might want to skip out on the red carpet while carrying twins.

As for whether or not they’ll make an appearance at the 2018 Met Gala, it’s all up in the air, but it’ll no doubt be unforgettable. The couple has, of course, continued to make headlines. Jay-Z recently opened up about his infidelity—and how they’ve moved on to work through it—in an interview with David Letterman on his Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. And Beyoncé shut down Coachella with one epic and historic performance.
