15 year old charged in connection to homicide of teen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UPDATE: CMPD charged a 15-year-old male juvenile for his involvement in the homicide of Tyshaud Nikese Brown, police said in a news release Friday afternoon.

The suspect was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. His name is not being released due to the fact that he is a juvenile.

Teen shot to death behind school posts video of final moments

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a homicide after a teenager was found dead on March 22 behind Allenbrook Elementary School in northwest Charlotte.

Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Tyshaud Nikese Brown.

Patrol officers responded around 1:30 p.m. to the 1400 block of Allenbrook Drive after they received a 911 call asking police to check on someone near the school, but officers wouldn't say if a teacher or staff member made the call.

Officers said they found Brown lying near the baseball field behind Allenbrook Elementary School with an apparent gunshot wound.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene and saw officers in the school’s playground area. The entrance behind the school was blocked and roped off with crime scene tape.

"You know, I think any time we have an incident surrounding an elementary or any type of school, we want to make sure everyone feels safe, so that's the only reason you see school resource officers, school law enforcement, as well as CMPD," said CMPD Maj. Freda Lester.

Paramedics pronounced Brown dead at the scene. Police have not made any arrests.

The homicide was Charlotte’s 20th of 2017.

Brown attended West Mecklenburg High School, and has a brother and two sisters, his mother told Channel 9.

Students and teachers were seen crying Thursday morning on campus, and many of whom had a personal connection with Brown.

One student told Channel 9 that he heard about Brown's death and couldn't get over the news.

Brown's mother told Channel 9 that her son left their home on his bike Tuesday night and posted a video to Instagram while he was near the school.

Brown’s uncle shared the video Thursday with Eyewitness News.

After Brown didn’t return home Tuesday night, his mother reported him missing on Wednesday morning.

She also told Channel 9 that she drove by the scene and started to cry when she saw the police activity.

She said she knew he was at the park because of the Instagram video from that location.

Police said it appears that Brown was shot in the back. He lives a little more than a mile from where he was found.

"It's definitely going to hit the neighborhood hard," a neighbor of Brown's said.

No students were involved, according to police.

Police hadn't provided any new information as of Thursday afternoon, but Brown's family thinks his last post on Instagram might provide valuable information. In the video, you can see the playground at Allenbrook Elementary School.

His uncle, Derell Moore, begged that person, or anyone with information, to come forward.

"Put yourself in our situation right now,” Moore said. “He is just going to be greatly missed.  It's just, it's unjustified."

Vanessa Bryant, Brown’s aunt, said he admired Cam Newton and wanted to play professional football, and that he had no enemies and loved helping people.

"I can't even describe how it feels. I just don't know how whoever did this can lay down at night,” Bryant said.

Brown played football at West Meck, where there was a heightened police presence Thursday afternoon.

Justin Mattheson heard the news before school.

"I couldn't get over it. It was our school,” Mattheson said.

Bryant said the family is searching for answers and they have a message for the shooter.

“We are going to find you and we want you prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Bryant said.

His family said the music in the video isn't the kind he normally listened to, and they believe that he wasn't alone.

Brown’s family said he was a good person, and that he didn't get into trouble, but somehow trouble found him.

His uncle pleaded for help in finding the shooter.

"Put yourself in our situation right now. What would you want?” asked Derell Moore. “Wouldn't you want justice? Please come forward, say what you know."

The 911 call was made about an hour before Allenbrook Elementary School dismissed for the day. The school was put on lockdown as officers swarmed the area.

Police asked parents who were picking up their children to go to the front door of the school because detectives were still at the scene investigating.

Parents told Channel 9 that they received a call from the school about the homicide investigation and many of them feared the worst.

"I have an 8-year-old that goes to this school. I really, I really just want to get up here right now," Natalie McPherson said.

Channel 9 also saw teachers walking some students to their nearby homes.

Police have not released a motive in the homicide.
