On top of some veteran players who will be held out for rest, two prominent Pittsburgh Steelers will not play Sunday because of injuries.

Starting strong safety Terrell Edmunds and kicker Chris Boswell were ruled out of the regular-season finale at the Cleveland Browns. A shoulder injury will cause Edmunds to miss a game for the first time in his three-year NFL career. He has not practiced all week.

Boswell did not practice Thursday or Friday and will miss a game for the third time over the past five weeks. The Steelers will need to promote Matthew Wright off the practice squad to kick in Boswell’s place against the Browns.

Wright made all six extra points and converted his only field-goal attempt during his first two NFL regular-season games last month.

Rookie Antoine Brooks is the most likely candidate to start in place of Edmunds, though veteran special-teams captain Jordan Dangerfield also is available and converted safety Marcus Allen also could see some reps as a hybrid box safety without Edmunds available.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not play Sunday, and center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker T.J. Watt also sat out the entire week’s practice, a strong indication neither will play. The only practice of the week for defensive lineman Cameron Heyward was Thursday, and fellow defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt and guard David DeCastro are other candidates to skip Sunday’s game after each sat out one practice this week. Tuitt was listed as having a back injury.

Allen (stinger) and reserve outside linebacker Ola Adeniyi will make their returns to the lineup after missing last week’s win against the Indianapolis Colts, and veteran defensive lineman Tyson Alualu is expected to play after missing Wednesday’s practice because of an ankle injury.

The only player added to the practice report Friday was receiver Diontae Johnson, who did not participate because of illness.
