We know you might be excited for Christmas, but there's the small matter of Halloween to attend to first.

And what better way to scare yourself shitless than by visiting Alton Towers and getting lost in the brand new – and "petrifying" – live-action Scare Maze?

Yep, if you head over to Alton Towers Resort this Halloween, you might just be one of the (un)lucky ones chosen to try out the theme park's latest attraction, which is more than just your average maze.

Thrill-seekers will be shunted into a rickety wooden cage to experience the maze, which is called 'The Welcoming: Be Chosen'. (Doesn't sound that welcoming?)

Some unsuspecting London commuters were taken as the first test subjects this week, so watch your backs, everyone.

The maze itself is also the prelude to Alton Towers' huge new ride that will be debuting in Spring next year, the cryptically-titled Secret Weapon 8.

And if the Scare Maze isn't your bag, then Alton Towers still sounds like a suitably spooky place to spend this Halloween season.

Not only does Scarefest 2017 offer up mine tours and a House of Monsters, the park will also be open until 9pm every night – and we all know everything is scarier in the dark.

Alton Towers' Scarefest runs from October 20 to October 31. You can get all the terrifying details of the event and book tickets on its website.
