The 110-foot-long tall ship Exy Johnson sailed this weekend from the harbor at Ports O’ Call along the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast as part of a unique program for Spanish speakers.
The high school students aboard were treated to the coastal sights as well as educational activities conducted bilingually by a team of high school docents from Animo Leadership charter high school.
The goal: raising awareness about the need to stem storm drain run-off pollution from trash that ends up on the local coastline to the detriment of sea life.
The Los Angeles Maritime Institute, in collaboration with the Coastal Conservancy, sponsors the coastal awareness educational experience and exploration sail, which is touted as the first of its kind for Spanish speakers.
The free sails will occur every month through June 2018. The next two are July 22 and Aug. 12. For more information, call 310-833-6055.
