Stop and Smell the Orchids at Dearborn Market

Deep Cut Orchid Society's 14th Annual Exhibit attracts crowds pining for flowers in an endless winter.

Valet parkers had to manage crowds in the snow-framed parking lot of Dearborn Market on Rt. 35 in Holmdel, as people arrived from all over the tri-state area to gush over orchids at the Deep Cut Orchid Society's 14th Annual Orchid Exhibit in the Greenhouse on Saturday, Feb. 12.

"I think this show is such a success, because people are glad to be away from the snow and around colorful flowers," said Joe Silva, of Silva Orchids in Neptune.

The show continues through Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

Orchids are the largest selling plant in the world, with over 35,000 species and 200,000 registered hybrids, according to Pat Bliss, Orchid Society former vice-president. The only place orchids don't grow is Antarctica, she said.

The event, co-sponsored by the Lucarelli family's Dearborn Farms and the Deep Cut Orchid Society includes displays from best in show winners from private growers and vendors.

"Orchids are good therapy," said Debra Stuart, Rahway resident, who came with her sister-in-law to purchase a plant.

"I'm here to collect more, because they last forever and don't require much care," said Linda Stuart of Morganville.

Orchids make good plants because they can grow in  a greenhouse, a garden, on a window sill, in a basement with lights, and just about anywhere, Bliss explains.

"Once you grow one, you can't stop," Bliss said. "They are addictive, like good chocolate."

Dearborn is a perfect place for the show, because it allows for the public to access the market free of charge, said Aric Wilt, President of Greater New York Orchid Society.

Dearborn Market is running an Orchid Show Photo Contest for anyone 18 or older who takes a photo at the show. The winner will receive a $100 gift certifcate to Dearborn Farms. Contestants must enter their photo at www.facebook.com/dearbornmarket by 11:59 p.m. on 12/20.

Dearborn and the Deep Cut Orchid Society will team up again in the Greenhouse on April 9 at 10:30 and 2:00 to offer free seminars in orchid growing and care. To pre-register call (732) 264-0256.

The Orchid Society has been in existence for 25 years. It takes its name from Deep Cut Gardens on Red Hill Road in Middletown, but now meets at the Monmouth Reform Temple in Tinton Falls. They welcome beginners. For more information visit www.deepcutorchids.com.
