Icy roads cause four-vehicle crash involving Papillion police cruiser
Highway 370 and 96th Street proved to be one of the biggest trouble spots Sunday night.
Papillion Police Sgt. Larry Fasnacht said icy roads caused a crash involving four vehicles — one of them a Papillion police cruiser. Fasnacht said the officer was not in the cruiser at the time and is OK.
It happened around 5 p.m. Sunday. Fasnacht said a truck driving near the Highway 370 and 96th Street intersection spun out and crossed the median. He said the truck then crashed into oncoming traffic.
While Papillion police officers were on scene working that crash, another one happened when a driver slid into a police cruiser.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Fasnacht said everyone involved is OK.
However, he said the roads are in much different condition as of Sunday night.
“They’re terrible. They look good but they’re not,” Fasnacht said. “They’re bad, very bad and I would encourage everyone to stay off the road.”
As temperatures have continued to drop Sunday, refreezing on the roads is a concern.
Omaha city crews will be out working until all roads are clear. That includes 100 city plows and an additional 175 contracted plows that have been working to clear neighborhood streets.
Nebraska Department of Transportation plows remain out on Interstate 80 and metro area highways Sunday night. NDOT crews expect to work through the Monday morning commute.
