'Every relationship has its ups and downs, but we love each other': Dustin Johnson says he and fiancee Paulina Gretzky are 'committed to being a family' after reports suggesting he was having an affair with a socialite

Former world No. 1 golfer Dustin Johnson says he and fiancee Paulina Gretzky ‘love each other very much’ and ‘are committed to being a family’ amidst rumors he was carrying on with another woman.

‘Every relationship goes through its ups and downs, but most importantly, we love each other very much and are committed to being a family,’ the former U.S. Open champ tweeted late Tuesday.

‘Thank you for your love and support.’

Johnson’s tweet is aimed at putting to rest the recent spate of reports suggesting that his relationship with Gretzky - the 29-year-old daughter of hockey’s ‘Great One’, Wayne Gretzky - is in trouble.

Earlier on Tuesday, the socialite rumored to have caused the split between between Johnson and his model fiancée denied reports of a relationship with the golf pro.

‘I am not in a relationship with Dustin Johnson,’ Yassie Safai wrote on her Instagram account on Tuesday.

‘Nor have we had any prior relationship.

‘I met Dustin Johnson at Sherwood Country Club. I have run into him at Sherwood maybe 4 times since then and yes briefly spoke with him, like I'm sure any avid golfer and member would.

Yassie Safai, 39, is denying rumors that her relationship with Johnson caused the breakup of his five-year engagement to Gretzky

‘I am sure he is a great person but we do not have a close friendship.

‘I have never met Paulina Gretzky and do not know the Gretzky family, but again, I am sure they are great people.

‘I have no insight into the rumors around Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky's relationship.

‘I wish them nothing but the best. I just want to go back to living my normal life.’

Meanwhile, someone described by TMZ as a ‘source extremely close to the Gretzky family’ says that Johnson and his fiance are still together, though there was no explanation as to why Paulina Gretzky deleted photos of the father of her two children from her Instagram account.

The golf world has been abuzz with rumors about US Open champion Johnson's new found friendship with Safai.

Safai, 39, has made no secret of her admiration for the sportsman, tweeting updates about Johnson who also practices at the exclusive Sherwood Country Club near Los Angeles - where her own partner Michael Humbarger, is also a member.

Gretzky, 29, and 34-year-old golf champion Dustin, known as DJ, have been engaged since 2013 and have enjoyed high points like the births of their two children.

They've also had to endure public lows, such as DJ being suspended from the PGA after testing positive for cocaine, and reportedly having affairs with not one, but two players' wives in 2014.

However, rumours are now circulating over a break-up. 

Suggestions of a split were fuelled recently when model and singer Gretzky, the mother of Johnson's two children, deleted every photo of him from her Instagram despite plans for the pair to marry next year.

‘I am not in a relationship with Dustin Johnson,’ Yassie Safai wrote on her Instagram account on Tuesday. ‘Nor have we had any prior relationship'

She was also missing from the BMW Championship in Philadelphia, this week, while she is usually spotted at his competitions.

A Sherwood club member told The Sun: 'It is the talk of the club that Yassie is at the center of the split, and it has caused the Gretzky family a lot of heartache.

'Yassie is very ambitious, and is keen to be seen as the ultimate golf chick – but I'm not sure if being involved in something like this will help or hurt those ambitions.'

Yassie, who often promotes Dustin through her social media on which she calls herself a 'golf lover' and 'world traveller'.

Some of Gretzky's stories do still feature Johnson, but with such a photogenic lifestyle, perhaps deleting the stories as well was simply to much

Johnson and Gretzky, the daughter of Canadian ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, have been engaged for nearly five years.

They have two children aged three and one.

In July, the golfer publicly acknowledged his extended family – who are said to be furious over the fall out.

He said: 'Obviously I have a lot of fans out there thanks to Wayne and the family and I appreciate all the support,' said Johnson.

'With my ties to Canada, Paulina and her dad being Wayne Gretzky I definitely get a lot of fans that pull for Wayne, pull for me.

'I definitely helped. The fans are great. I definitely feel like an honorary Canadian.'

Gretzky has 717,000 followers on the social media platform and last posted August 27 in a photo that went viral of her in a hot pink spandex body suit with a lollipop emoji. 

In less than two weeks Johnson is due to compete in the Ryder Cup.

Johnson has previously been accused of cheating, including with LPGA Tour star Natalie Gulbi.
