Vermont State Police: Foul play not suspected in apparent drowning deaths of elderly couple found in small pond in Peru

PERU, Vt. - No foul play is suspected in the apparent drowning deaths of an elderly couple whose bodies were discovered Thursday in a small pond, state police said.

Friends and neighbors of the couple, identified by state police as Lawrence and Ruth Daley, ages 81 and 80, respectively, became concerned after they had not heard from them in a few days.

They were found shortly after 2:30 p.m. in a pond that Lawrence Daley was a caretaker for. State police said the Daleys were known to use a small boat to prepare the pond for winter.

Although both victims were able to swim, their medical conditions are believed to have contributed to the accident, state police said.
