Three men were arrested after shots were fired at a house in Litherland.

Police were called to Harrington Road at about 11.20pm yesterday after residents heard two gunshots.

This morning part of the road was cordoned off and damage could be seen to the front of a house, where residents said a family with two babies lived.

Officers arrested an 18-year-old man and 19-year-old man on suspicion of firearm offences and a 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering offences.

All three men remain in custody at this time and are being questioned by officers.

One man said: “The noise woke me up. It was like a double bang.

“The second bang was the loudest bang I’ve ever heard.

“It sounded like someone had thrown a firework into my front garden because it was so loud.

“It is a quiet area, I just hope this is the first and last incident of its kind.”

A house on the road was cordoned off this morning and damage could be seen above the front window.”

Another resident said: “There were police cars on the road and there was a police helicopter overhead.

“It’s really shocking. It’s never happened before around here. I saw two figures running away down Moss Lane.”

A woman who lives nearby said: “I slept through the bangs but my son rang me about 12.30am because he had heard what had happened.

“He lives down the road and could see it so he was worried.

“There were lots of comings and goings with police, the helicopter was up for a long time and there was a van outside with its blue lights on all night.”

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Keaton, said: “We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously and we are absolutely determined to identify the people responsible.

“Thankfully in this instance no one has been injured, but this could easily have been different.

“Anyone who would fire a weapon in a residential street needs to taken off the streets and I would like to reassure the community that we will do everything we can to bring the offenders to justice and patrols in the area have been increased.

“I would urge anyone with information about this incident, or any gun-related crime, to call police. The information you provide will always be thoroughly examined and could really help us in our enquiries.

“In particular I would appeal to anyone who saw a silver Ford Focus in the area at the time of the incident driving at speed to contact police, as the occupants of this vehicle could have some very important information for our investigation.”

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the Matrix Serious Organised Crime team on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
