Just as Lionel Messi caught up and moved up the list on Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo jumped ahead of his Barcelona rival on Wednesday, scoring his 70th career UEFA Champions League goal.

Ronaldo silenced the Anfield crowd in the 23rd minute of Real Madrid's game against Liverpool after passing the ball to James Rodriguez, who gave it right back to Ronaldo, the star blowing past two Liverpool defenders to go up 1-0. The goal puts him one behind Real Madrid's Raul for the all-time Champions League career scorers record and one ahead of Messi.

Karim Benzema would score two more goals to give the defending Champions League champs the 3-0 win over Liverpool.

"It was special, my first goal at Anfield and I am very happy," said Ronaldo after the game. "I'm not worried about the Champions League goalscoring record. I know I will beat it. Me and Lionel Messi are very close. The best thing is that the team has nine points."

Liverpool sunk to third place in the Group B standings after Bulgarian team Ludogorets Razgrad won their first-ever Champions League game, defeating FC Basel 1-0. FC Basel were a man down when Serey Die was shown a red card after a hard foul on Cosmin Moti in the 18th minute of the match. Yordan Minev would score the game-winner in the first minute of stoppage time in the second half to give Ludogorets the 1-0 victory and second place in the Group B standings behind Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund also had an easy night, putting four goals on Galatasaray to stay atop Group D. Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set the tone early, blasting a Marco Reus pass on the fast break to score in the 8th minute. Borussia Dortmund's win keeps them ahead of second place Arsenal in Group D, who had to come back against Belgium champions Anderlecht after former DC United's Andy Najar headed Dennis Praet's cross to take the lead in the 71st minute. Kieran Gibbs would tie the game for the Gunners, rocketing Calum Chambers' cross past Silvio Proto. Lukas Podolski would go on to take advantage of Anderlecht's defensive breakdown a minute into stoppage time in the second half, hitting the game-winning goal with the clock winding down to win 2-1.

Bayer Leverkusen took control of Group C with a 2-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg. Giulio Donati got the BayArena crowd on their feet in the 58th minute, nailing a long shot from outside the box to put the home team up 1-0. Kyriakos Papadopoulos would seal the game for Leverkusen after heading in a free kick, helping the German squad hand Zenit their first loss in this year's group stage phase of the tournament.

The victory allowed them to move ahead of AC Monaco, who earned a point on Wednesday playing Portuguese champions Benfica to a 0-0 draw. Monaco had a man-advantage over the Primeira Liga champs after Lisandro Lopez was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Joao Moutinho. But the team could not capitalize, ending the match in a draw.
