Marvel Studios' all-star action film "The Avengers" is the highest internationally grossing film of 2012, according to reports.

The superhero film earned one billion, five hundred and twelve million U.S. dollars in worldwide box office sales, making it the third highest grossing film ever made.

The film follows a group of mutant heroes, including Thor, The Hulk and Iron Man, who team up to stop Thor's adoptive brother Loki from taking over the world.

"The Avengers" was also the highest grossing comic book adaptation, superhero film and alien invasion film in history.

And there is still some money to be made with the next film "The Avengers 2" now in the works.
