WHAT'S NEW AT THE MU? 'A Place in the Sun' to be shown outdoors

Margy Vogt

The ReelMassillon series will present a special summertime show. “A Place in the Sun” will be screened on an inflatable outdoor screen on the Massillon Museum lawn at 8 p.m. Thursday. The event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $7. Guests should bring a chair or blanket. Cornhole games will be set up at 7 p.m. and Anderson’s in the City will be open for the purchase of refreshments.

HIGHLIGHTS

The 1951 black-and-white film is based on the Theodore Dreiser novel, “An American Tragedy.” Patrick Kearney adapted the book into a play; Michael Wilson and Harry Brown wrote the screenplay.

George Eastman (Montgomery Clift), a poverty-stricken young man, leaves his religious mother in Chicago to work in his wealthy uncle’s business in California. Although he is advised not to socialize with the women in the factory, George dates assembly-line worker, Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters), but when he is promoted, George meets the beautiful Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor) at a party at his uncle’s house. She introduces him to local high society and they fall in love. During a dinner party at Angela’s lake house with parents, relatives, and friends, Alice calls George and gives him 30 minutes to meet her. If he does not comply, she will crash the party and disclose that she is carrying George’s child and expects him to marry her. In the legal tangle that follows, Raymond Burr appears as the district attorney.

Films for this year’s ReelMassillon series feature fashionable Hollywood crime dramas emphasizing cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. The film noir genre from the 1940s and 1950s calls to mind a low-key black-and-white visual style. ReelMassillon, managed by Kurtiss Hare, is a partnership of the Massillon Museum, Historic Massillon Main Street, the Lincoln Theatre, and KinoArts. Funding is provided by ArtsinStark.
