College Notebook: Buffalo St. honors running back Pete

Senior running back Rich Pete (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) was named the Buffalo State College “Athlete of the Week” after his three touchdowns helped his football team improve to 2-0 with a 60-32 victory over Indiana’s Manchester University.

Pete rushed for 168 yards – just two shy of his career-high – on 19 carries, including touchdown runs of 17 and 45 yards. The 5-foot-6, 165-pounder also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass.

It was the 11th 100-yard rushing game of Pete’s career. He has been Buffalo State’s leading rusher in each of his first three seasons and he currently leads the Bengals with 271 yards on 45 carries.

Buffalo State meets Alfred University in its Homecoming Game this Saturday. Pete and the Bengals host Utica College on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Sophomore receiver and return man Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) had two punt returns for 57 yards, an 18-yard kickoff return, and caught a 22-yard pass to help Bloomsburg University – ranked 21st in the NCAA Division II poll – to a 24-21 win over California (Pa.) University.

Running back Dylan Peebles (Port Leyden/South Lewis) rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries in Cortland State’s 17-14 loss to Brockport. Peebles also had a 61-yard kickoff return for the Red Dragons.

Malone University linebacker Dan Mower (Holland Patent) had seven tackles and recovered a fumble in a 37-6 loss to Michigan Tech.

Field Hockey

St. John Fisher junior goalkeeper Danielle Famolaro (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was named Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week after her 10 saves in a 5-3 victory helped the Cardinals end Stevens Tech’s 20-game E8 regular-season winning streak. Teammate Stacie Skidmore (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored her fifth goal of the season in that game, and Famolaro also made seven saves in a 2-1 win over RPI. Engineers captain Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford) scored the RPI goal.

Oneonta State’s Kelcy Forbragd (Camden) scored her third goal of the season in a 3-2 loss to Rochester.

A goal by Kailee Coleman (Blossvale/Camden) helped Nazareth College edge Houghton College 3-2.

Central Michigan University’s Kaysie Gregory (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored the Chippewas’ only goal in a 5-1 loss to Providence College.

Women’s Cross-Country

A second-place finish by Cassia Hameline (New Hartford) led 20th-ranked St. Lawrence University to a two-point victory over No. 2 Williams College in the 14-team Saratoga Invitational. Hameline covered the Saratoga Springs State Park 5K course in 17:20, just 13 seconds behind the race winner.

Cazenovia College sophomore Shelby McIntyre (Ilion) was named North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Runner of the Week after she finished third in a field of 89 runners at the Hobart Invitational with a 6K time of 25:00.9.

Men’s Soccer

Senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) had an assist in Oneonta State’s 4-1 win over previously-unbeaten Vassar College, helping the Red Dragons improve to 5-0-0 and climb from fifth to No. 3 in the NCAA Division III rankings.

A goal by Eric Swiecki (Boonville/Adirondack) helped Paul Smith’s College beat Hampshire 4-0.

Women’s Soccer

Freshman Paige Sullivan (Poland) scored her first collegiate goal to help Nazareth College beat Clarkson University 3-1. Michaela Soules (Camden) assisted on Sullivan’s goal.

Freshman Theresa Lohr (Durhamville/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored her first collegiate goal on a header to help William Smith College beat the University of Rochester 4-0.

Cazenovia College’s Kaitlyn Lyon (Dolgeville) scored in a 4-3 win over Penn College.
