The 3D sci-fi movie, starring Taylor Kitsch, Samantha Morton and Dominic West, has only raked in $184 million dollars at the worldwide box office, but ticket sales are split between cinema owners and the studio.

The film is estimated to have cost $250 million to make with an extra $100 million spent on marketing.

Disney remained upbeat in a statement released about the figures saying: ‘As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the forthcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.’

Based on a series of books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter has attracted mainly bad reviews with Metro’s film critic Colin Kennedy saying: ‘You could solve real problems here on planet Earth with the money Disney spent putting one man on Mars.’

The film, directed by Andrew Stanton, follows a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) transplanted to Mars.

Kitsch told Metro: ‘He’s a guy that’s completely lost his purpose.‘Through these crazy events he’s put on Mars and he has an opportunity to reinvent himself. A woman then comes into his life and turns it back on.

‘Lynn (Collins) plays a very strong woman. But the bottom line is, it’s a love story.’

Disney produced one of the biggest flops of last year with animated movie Mars Needs Moms.

The movie sold $40 million in tickets worldwide with a budget of about $150 million.
