A Detroit father has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old girl.

Prosecutors said Ivan Berrien, 45, left his home on the city's east side Tuesday to pick up pizza and was not there when the shooting happened.

He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm and is expected to be arraigned Friday morning in 36th District Court, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

Berrien does not have an attorney listed in court documents.

He had a rifle in his bedroom, and while he was out of the house, his 14-year-old son got the gun, the release said.

Officials said the teenager was playing with it Tuesday with his 13-year-old friend, and the gun discharged in the 15800 block of Lappin Street.

The girl, whose name was not released, was struck in the head and died at the scene.

Three other children—between the ages of 5 and 7—were in the home at the time.
