SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — More than 180 central Utah workers will lose their jobs next year as power company PacifiCorp plans to shutter its coal mine in Emery County next year.
PacifiCorp Energy president and CEO Micheal Dunn announced Monday that it no longer makes financial sense to keep the mine open and flowing into the nearby Huntington power plant.
Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon says the closure will have an effect on her town, the nearest to the mine.
PacifiCorp plans to truck in coal from other mines in nearby counties, which Gordon will bring a steady stream of trucks through the community.
The Deer Creek Mine began operation in 1974.
