Obama scores $71 million in June, far less than Romney
President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign pulled in $71 million during June, far below Gov. Mitt Romney’s score of $106 million in donations.
The campaign released the news in a fundraising announcement.
“We had our best fundraising month yet, and we still fell about $35 million short,” said a statement from the campaign. “We can win while being outspent — but we need to keep it close.”
“This is no joke,” said the statement. “If we can’t keep the money race close, it becomes that much harder to win in November.”
Obama’s financial haul was boosted by his decision to back a redefinition of marriage to include singe-sex couples, and by his record-setting fundraising pace.
In June, Obama attended his 170th fundraiser.
In contrast, President George W. Bush had attended 79 fundraisers at the same point in his 2004 re-election campaign.
In June, Obama’s team changed the tone of its announcements to alarm complacent supporters in the hope of spurring donations.
“June was our best fundraising month yet,” said a campaign statement.
“We exceeded expectations — more than 706,000 people like you stepped up and pitched in for a grand total of $71 million raised for this campaign and the Democratic Party. … We still got beat. Handily. Romney and the RNC pulled in a whopping $106 million.”
