Hospitality fair to be held Wednesday at Destiny USA

Syracuse, NY -- Bryant & Stratton College will hold a workshop and fair Wednesday for students and others to learn about employment opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Canyon area of the Destiny USA shopping mall in Syracuse. It is free and open to everyone.

Speakers at the event will include David Holder, president of the Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau, and David Heymann, president of the Greater Syracuse Hospitality & Tourism Association.

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with employers, learn about potential job opportunities and network with local businesses including Dave & Buster's, Cafe Kubal, Turning Stone Resort Casino, Vernon Downs, local hotels, and event and travel companies.

Shaunna Plank, associate director of career services at Bryant & Stratton, said employment opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry have been growing in Central New York. The jobs run the gamut from hotel managers to accountants, human resource managers and front desk managers, she said.

The leisure and hospitality sector is the fastest growing industry in the Syracuse area. There were 2,200 more jobs in the industry in June than there were in the same month last year, according to the state Department of Labor. That's an increase of 7.5 percent -- far more than any other sector.

About 180 of the 1,100 students at Bryant & Stratton's campuses in Syracuse and Clay are in the college's hospitality management and general management degree programs.
