CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa — An Iowa father who was pulled over through the use of a spike strip and held at gunpoint has now been ticketed for speeding his laboring wife to the hospital.

According to FOX31 Denver sister station WHO-TV, Ben Kohnen was taking orders from his wife on Oct. 14, despite seeing the emergency lights in his rear view mirror. His wife, Rachel, was in labor and thought she wasn’t going to make to the hospital in time to have her baby.

Kohnen was going 30 mph over the speed limit, catching the attention of police.

“He (a police officer) starts following me and he turns on his lights,” Kohnen said. “And my wife says, ‘We can’t pull over, the baby is coming now!'”

Kohnen’s wife confirms the story, saying she called 911 in an effort to inform police of the couple’s issue. But the two suspect the 911 dispatcher probably couldn’t understand Rachel in between her contractions.

Choosing to heed his wife’s orders and not those of the trailing officers, police ended up using spike strips to blow out the tires on the couple’s SUV, which brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop on the outskirts of the town of Fort Dodge.

The Kohnens said they were ordered to the ground and held at gunpoint until police realized it was an emergency.

Since the incident, the Calhoun County district attorney has issued Kohnen two harsh citations: a speeding ticket for going 86 in a 55 mph zone, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Kohnen said this could put his commercial driver license at risk, which he uses for his job.
