(Quitman County, MS) A man is locked up in the Quitman County jail after turning himself in for shooting and killing a father of three inside a convenience store.

It happened at the Kangaroo Express around 6:30 Thursday morning.

The victim is identified as David Wayne “Dusty” Smith.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says Roger Craig shot and killed him inside this Kangaroo Express on Highway 3 in Marks. He turned himself in afterwards.

People in the small town say the shooting was the result of an on-going disagreement between the men, possibly involving a saw. But the MBI didn’t confirm that.

The victim is a well-known tree trimmer in Quitman County.

Charlotte Still is a friend of murdered man.

“I’ve known him since he was real young and he’s always been nothing but respectful to me. And I loved him very much,” she said.

Still says the dispute between the two men wasn’t a secret but reached a boiling point Thursday when Smith came into the store,

“The guy’s been threatening him, to shoot him. You know he pulled a gun on him a month ago.”

Smith and the shooter’s brother, Eddie Craig, were on their way to a job.

Still says Smith also had his 7-year-old son with him when the shooting happened.

“Oh my god, he saw his daddy get killed. That’s so awful,” she said.

A McDonald’s restaurant, attached to the Kangaroo Express, was open at the time of the shooting although no one there was hurt.

Benjamin Raymond, who is related to the victim, said, “It’s crazy man. I can’t believe it happened. It’s a shock.”

After Smith was shot, Still says he tried to drive himself to a nearby hospital.

“He made it to the four-way stop they said. And then that’s when he started passing out. He told Eddie, ‘I’m passing out.’ And then they got to the hospital and by the time he got into the emergency room…it was over,” she said.
