The Rialto Unified School District hosted its first Lego League Regional Qualifying Tournament at Rialto Middle School on Saturday, organized by Rialto and Kolb middle schools.

The event is an international robotics competition for elementary and middle school students. Eleven student teams from around Southern California developed, tested, built and programmed robots made from Lego Mindstorm EV3 construction sets.

The teams went head-to-head Saturday at Rialto Middle School in a variety of competitions that required their custom creation to efficiently complete a set of complex tasks based on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“The engineering is major,” said Rod Campbell, a sixth-grade math and science teacher and one of the tournament organizers. “There’s a whole lot of problem-solving and teamwork involved.”

Trophies were to be awarded to the top five teams and winning teams will have an opportunity to compete at Legoland in an upcoming championship tournament.
