Could you win a spelling bee?

MUNCIE – The 43rd annual Star Press Spelling bee lasted for 45 rounds Saturday morning. The top three contestants had to move on to a list of questions which were not given to them to study ahead of time. These contestants are in eighth grade or younger. Here are some of the words they spelled correctly:

Weissnichtwo — (noun) an indefinite, unknown, or imaginary place.

muishond — (noun) either of two southern African weasels that emit a fetid odor when disturbed.

voortrekker — (noun) a South African pioneer; especially: one of the Boers who took part in the trek from Cape Colony to the Transvaal in 1834-37.

shrieval — (adjective) of or relating to a sheriff.

pickelhaube — (noun) a spiked helmet formerly worn by German soldiers.

rendezvous — (noun) a meeting at an appointed place and time.

facetious — (adjective) characterized by pleasantry or levity: stimulating laughter

symbiosis — (noun) the living together of two dissimilar organisms in any of various mutually beneficial relationships

surveillance — (noun) continuous observation of a person or area (as to detect developments, movements, or activities.)

altruism — (noun) uncalculated consideration of, regard for, or devotion to others’ interests sometimes in accordance with an ethical principle.
