Swingin' in the rain

Wind and rain couldn’t stop Dusty Rhodes and his junior golfers from hitting the links last Friday for their first official outing.

Rhodes has 88 kids registered this year throughout the three junior golfer groups – beginners, preteens, and teenagers. Registration numbers have stayed almost exactly the same from last year, said Rhodes. There were a total of 89 registered kids in the program at the end of its stint in 2014.

“We’re still right there, we hang around at about the same number every year,” he said during an interview at the rain soaked driving range.

Rhodes currently has roughly 29 volunteers working with him and the kids in some capacity. Fourteen of those volunteers are instructors who work at each station to help the kids improve their golf game, the other 15 are people that “come out and make sure the kids are safe and that nobody is getting hurt,” said Rhodes.

Rhodes said that support from the club and the community has been “absolutely wonderful”.

“The kids are treated so well here. The club is fully supportive. Everybody has been very supportive of the program, even the members of the club.”
