The veteran comedian's crooning character Nick Ocean returns at last

In case you haven't seen the internet today, Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary with a star-studded show featuring cast members and distinguished guests from throughout its four-decade run, from 50 Cent to Zach Galifianakis, with several venerated veterans returning for one more night at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Among the cadre of comedy greats was Bill Murray, who returned to the show that helped him rise to prominence in the late 1970s to cap off a tribute to the show's healthy history with musical comedy by reviving vintage character Nick Ocean, a smooth-as-velvet lounge singer famed for performing movie themes that (ordinarily) are purely instrumental. And what better way to welcome back the old crooner than with a passionate, caterwauling rendition of the theme from Jaws, reimagined as an emotional love ballad to the world's most famous Destroyer Of Boats and Eater Of People? Besides, it's kind of worth it just to hear Murray howl, "You bastard, Jaaaaawwwws!" and other jilted-lover admonishments.

Watch the performance below.

The wider musical-comedy homage during SNL's 40th-anniversary special also featured performances from Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer, who performed Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk, Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig, and Steve Martin.

That wasn't all in terms of musical love from the comedy institution, either — the show got under way with an incredible rap from new BFFs Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon, who basically summarised 40 years of live comedy history in rhyming lyrics in less than five minutes.

Saturday Night Live's 40th-anniversary special will air in Australia on The Comedy Channel next Saturday, 28 Feb, at 7.30pm.
