Mitt Romney is enjoying the perks of an influential and meaningful title these days, but it’s not “President,” as he had once imagined — it’s “grandpa.”

Romney and his wife, Ann, who together have 22 grandchildren, recently took five of the kids on a comprehensive trip through the Southwest — climbing canyons, jumping in lakes and smiling for the camera in dozens of photos the former presidential candidate posted to social media this week.

“My Mom and Dad began the tradition, showing their grandchildren the majesty of our country and teaching them about the sacrifices and character of the pioneers,”‘ Romney wrote about the trip on Medium.com.

The journey took the family through large chunks of Utah and Arizona, where the group visited Goblin Valley, Spooky Gulch, Peekaboo Slot Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park, Bryce National Park, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Rainbow Arch, the Grand Canyon and the four falls in the Havasupai Reservation.

“All totaled, we hiked over 50 miles,” wrote Romney, who has repeatedly said he will not run for President again in 2016. “Quite a feat for the young — and for Ann and me.”
