Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken has confirmed plans to turn Robin Williams' 1993 comedy Mrs Doubtfire into a Broadway musical.

The 65-year-old star, who has worked on hits for Disney classics including Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, revealed he was working on the project.

"It's going very well; it's in its early stages, and that's probably all I can say. We're really enjoying working on it" he told Entertainment Weekly Radio.

Playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein, who starred as Frank, Robin Williams' make-up artist brother in the movie has also been enlisted to write the script for the musical. He won a Tony Award for the Best Book of a Musical for his adaptation of La Cage aux Folles.

Based on the children's book by Anne Fine, Madame Doubtfire, is about a man who dresses up as a Scottish nanny so that he can spend time with his children following his divorce.

The hit comedy, which starred Sally Field, Mara Wilson and Pierce Brosnan, was a career-defining role for Williams.
