Amir Khan confirms he will face Chris Algieri in New York

British welterweight Amir Khan has confirmed he will return to New York to fight former light-welterweight world champion Chris Algieri next month.

Khan, 28, will face Algieri at the Barclays Center on 29 May.

The Bolton boxer defended his old WBA light-welterweight title in New York in May 2010, stopping Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round., external

"I have happy memories of New York, having made my US debut there," said Khan.

"I'm delighted to be fighting there again, against another champion.

"Algieri has shared the ring with some tremendous fighters and shown great skills, so I know I will need to be at my very best when we meet.

"In all my fights I bring excitement, speed and skill and can guarantee more fireworks."

Khan, whose last bout ended in a unanimous victory against Devon Alexander in December, had come under pressure to take on British rival Kell Brook but said he was already deep in negotiations to fight someone else.

Instead, IBF world welterweight champion Brook, 28, will defend his title against British world amateur champion Frankie Gavin at London's O2 Arena on 30 May.

Algieri, 31, has been defeated in only one of his 21 fights, a loss on points to Manny Pacquiao in November, during which he was knocked down six times.
