Cape Town - Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse believes Western Province backs Juan de Jongh and Cheslin Kolbe are the two unluckiest players not to make Heyneke Meyer's squad for the year-end tour to Europe.
Meyer picked five newcomers - Robbie Coetzee, Julian Redelinghuys, Nizaam Carr, Jaco Kriel and Seabelo Senatla - in his 36-man squad for Tests against Ireland (Dublin, November 8), England (London, November 15), Italy (Padova, November 22) and Wales (Cardiff, November 29).
Stonehouse, in an interview with SA Rugbymag, agreed that the newcomers deserved their call-ups but said De Jongh and Kolbe can count themselves unlucky.
Stonehouse said the reasoning behind their non-selection "has obviously been about size" but he mentioned that De Jongh has performed adequately against centres much bigger than him. He also said Kolbe is a player who is "faultless" on defence.
However, Stonehoue said people should respect Meyer's decisions as he has the right to do what he feels is best for the Boks.
De Jongh, at 1.75m and 88kg, is considered small for a modern-day centre, while fullback Kolbe (1.71m and 72kg - SA Rugby.net) is even smaller.
De Jongh will get another chance to catch the eye of the Bok selectors when he plays for the Barbarians against Australia at Twickenham this Saturday.
