These six kittens are looking for a loving home after being dumped in a cardboard box.

The two-week-old tabbies were left at the side of a path along with their starving mother. They are now being cared for by staff at St Francis Animal Rescue centre in South Shields, Tyneside.

Ann Kirton, founder of the non-profit organisation, said: "She was starving and very quiet, though she never ran away when we approached her. But she is nice and warm and cosy now with a full belly."

The cats were found by a dog walker on the popular path in the Whiteleas area of South Shields on Saturday.

Ms Kirton said the problem of cats being abandoned is getting worse despite offers to neuter pets for free.

She said: "We have lots of litters being brought in, and a few have even been dropped off outside my front door.

"These cats are the lucky ones in that they were found and brought in."
