Boater Safety Course Offered Through Sheriff’s Office in June

Posted

Residents looking to obtain a boating education card can sign up for a free class on June 6 hosted by Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

After passing the test at the end of the course, citizens are eligible to get a Washington state boating card for $10.

All boaters born after Jan. 1, 1955, are required to have a valid boating safety card when running a vessel with a 15 horsepower or higher powered engine.

The class is limited to the first 25 people to sign up, and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the sheriff’s office training room on the first floor of the Law and Justice Center in Chehalis. The class will take a break for lunch; food will not be provided.

To register, call Lisa Arthur at (360) 740-2713. If less than five people register for the course the week prior to June 6, the class will be canceled.

Boaters are encouraged to take the class in person, but there is an online course available for a fee. It can be found at www.boat-ed.com/washinton/index.html.

More information on the program can be found on the Washington State Parks website, www.parks.wa.gov.

Residents born before Jan. 1, 1955, are not required to get a boating education card.
