Singer Michael Johns, an "American Idol" season seven alumni who mysteriously passed away last summer, died from an enlarged heart, according to the coroner's report.

Johns' death has been linked to a "severe" enlargement of his heart and a fatty liver. He suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy with severe cardiomegaly, a spokesperson told The New York Daily News.

"Dilated cardiomyopathy occurs more frequently in men than women and is marked by a heart that becomes enlarged and weakened to the point it can't pump blood efficiently," the NY Daily News reported.

Dilated cardiomyopathy can be caused by "infectious agents, thyroid disease or even alcohol abuse." Drinking large amounts of alcohol can also cause a fatty liver.

At the time of his death, the singer was reportedly complaining about leg pains, and suspected that he might have had a blood clot. Johns' leg was swollen and bruised due to a sprained ankle, according to TMZ

A report claimed that Johns, who passed away on Aug. 1, could have been drinking prior to his death.

"It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns," the administrator of his website Tweeted at the time of his death.

"Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend," his family said in a statement. "We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and respect our need to grieve privately in this difficult time."

Johns appeared on "American Idol" during the 2008 season, but was eliminated early on. In 2009, he released a full length album, "Hold Back My Heart," which included the single "Heart on My Sleeve."
